WEll here we are -- nearly 10.30 Saturday morning.  The rain isn't falling -- although it has on and off and the track is still too wet to race.  Nearly everyone is out riding up and down the track in spectator cars and push trucks hoping to dry it out -- but for whatever reason, the safety crews aren't here yet and therefore there's no racing yet.  Too bad -- it's about 70F and there's a nice(!) tailwind.  What more can I say?

Ah, yeah -- another nice new thing is a work schedule for volunteers.  This is something that's been coming for a while - and will only make for a better race event for everyone, because now there are inspectors scheduled for every hour of the event (no more getting in line and waiting and looking and waiting for an inspector.  And there's also a schedule for an inspector to be in impound.  No, we're not going to measruing engines yet -- but while integrity is a great thing, holding everyone closer to the rules is better for all of us.  I'm happy to report that I can't spend all day in line waiting to run now -- I'm a bike tech for such-and-such hours, and so on.  ECTA continues to grow and to give the East Coast folks a good place to race safely.

There's a good turnout, just like I (and Joe, and others) reported last night.  Another dozen or so bikes this morning, another 18 or more cars -- looks like long waiting lines will be the order of the day.  But that's not such a bad thing -- we learn lots while chatting with the others in the staging lines, right?

Enough update.  I haven't taken any photos 'cause I've been inspecting -- and it's pretty cloudy and the light is only dank at best.  Later, hey?

Sounds like some good changes Jon. I look forward to running next year. Have a safe meet and good luck to everybody this weekend

Will it be a written schedule, so you can see where and when everybody is to be somewhere??

Yes, there is a written worker schedule.  I don't have a way to scan it in -- but it is written on paper.

On another note -- Guy Lombardi, a nitrous 'Busa racer from Florida (has been at Bville a few times but a first-timer here) went' 191 in the lights -- then had some issue and went down.  He's in the ambulance on the way to the hospital now.  No further word available.  thoughts and prayers will be welcome.

Lots of fast runs today -- no doubt helped by the 14-mph tailwind.  A 36-hp VW Bug went 101.

I'm in the prestage line -- don't have any other details for you.  Waiting for the ambulance to return so we can resume runs.  Later- - -

Jon, your camera will do OK if there is enough light to see.

The nice part about flat light is that there are no shadows to amount to anything.

Go ahead and take the fotos. If u aren't confident, just use the pop up flash and let it give a boost to the image.

Your army, that's staged at home, is hungry for images. That makes them impatient and demanding.

Thanks for the good words, Freud, but there won't be photos today.  Because of Guy's crash -- we've elected to shut down the meet for the rest of today.  That is -- with the ambulance gone for a couple of hours, and with the fact that it's raining right now - and likely to continue to do so for the next few hours -- well, JoeTimney and Keith Turk asked all of the racers what we'd do -- and it was by consensus that we decided to shut it down for the day.  We're heading to the barn rightnow -- with windshield wipers going (Nancy's driving, I'm typing).  I was in line -- about an hour from running -- when things stopped.  We're using the honor system to get back in line tmorrow in the same place and resume running at 8AM.  Will run 'til four (instead of the usual two) and then will ask everyone to pitch in to pack up the race track (this is the last event of the year -- things have to be put into winter storage).

That's the update for now.  Catch you later.  Will send word on Guy when I hear some.

Slim,

Just to clarify things, I believe that VW no longer is powered by the 36 hp engine that he set the record with last year, but now by the looks of it has a larger twin weber carbed engine for power, but it's still a fast bug.

I was still waiting back down the road in line, so no runs for me today, but tomorrow looks very promising.

Margaret and Tom...if there are any of Guy's family members at Maxton Sunday, please use your compassion and express my condolences to his

family. If it were my family, I would be so proud to have the two of you express the condolences.

Give Todd and Debbie a hug and tell them from whom it came.

They are our type of people.

Make a special effort to meet Josh. Hug him passionately for his FATHER.

Love Ya,

the old softie, FREUD

Good Morning, racers of the world.  It's a brisk 52F morning here at Maxton International Airport and racetrack.  Nice clear skies, brisk 10-mph or so HEADWIND.  Good air, better if it'd stand still!

We're going to run 'til 4 this afternoon (per the drivers meeting this morning) to try to give all the racers every chance they can have to make some more runs this year.  But here it is 20 until 9 -- no emergency rescue vehicle on duty, so we're waiting, waiting.

What wonderful news - that Tom and Margaret Bryant will be here today.  I sure look forward to the times when racers we know from other venues -- come to the Maxton Monster Mile.  We'll give them a fine welcome -- or if they don't make it -- we'll talk about them in their absence.

Finally -- yes, Guy Lombardi was a fine racer and a fine fellow.  He'll be missed by many.  May he rest in peace.

Hey -- we're under way!  95.187 mph for the first racer of the day -- a little bike (you betcha!).

I don't have a list of entrants so I can't tell you who's who, but Shane Stubbs just made a run at 207.  And so it'll go.  I've gotta work impound this morning won't be able to make play-by-play updates.  See you soon.

Well, well, would you lookie who I see is here?

Welcome to Tom and Margaret Bryant (in case you don't know them by sight).

Runs are going along fine -- but the headwind is keeping speeds down, dang it.  Ransom Holbrook ran a 189 on a 196.8 record (my record, thank you)  -- and I know there's more in that bike -- so it's gotta be either headwind or him cutting me some slack.  Hmmmm...

By the way, Nancy's working the records desk -- so I'll get updates now and then about who's gone fast enough.  In the meantime -- Graeme Bartels (Rabbit) set an A/BFR record this morning at 191.173.  Hurt the clutch, though. . .
