Hey Mike Kilger,

Did you win the S-T-B Roadster at the auction?

I was there. Saw Al & Charlie Hamilton said hi. Ferg III was there too. Interesting group of bidders.....  :?

Don't know who won Al's cars. He (Al) was bidding on the roadster but bowed out at the high 6 figures. Jane had a few tears when the 'liner went...

I'll post a few pictures after I load them up on photobucket, I'm dial-up here so I HATE it that I can't load direct to this site like we use to. I know Slim, I'll get over it some day.  :-P

Here are a few shots from the auction at the Petersen yesterday.

This is from the back of the room as the "Big John" Mazmanian 'Vette was on the block

The Sadd, Teague, & Bentley roadster

A couple of the Sprit of '76 'liner

And a few others that went over the block.....

What have I got wrong here?   Can you donate a car to a museum and they turn around and sell it?  What's happening here?

Easy does it Stan  the key word you used was "donate". These cars were all out of one man's collection in Winnimucca, Nv. He BOUGHT them. The Petersen meseum was the host for the auction. No harm no foul, just sorrow....

It is not unusual for museums to recieve a larger collection then they have room to house through donations. The building required to house the collection often costs more to construct and maintain then the collection is worth. In order that they can afford to support the museum operation, donated pieces are often offered for sale. What is customary etiquette is that if the piece falls into surplus catagory it is offered back to the donator first before being deacessioned from the collection.

Someone took a BIG loss on the Buddy Baker NASCAR Charger! That car sold not too long ago on ebay for $800K..... I'm just glad Cotton Owens family got the big money.  Sometimes the good guys win.

I sure was hoping someone would buy the liner and run it,

Never got to see it run.

Al's liner was one of my favorite vehicles at Bonneville.

I remember watching Al running down the long course and thinking boy Al is really flying, then Al shifted into high gear :-o and disappeared into the distance.

Tom we didnt go we thought, and from what we were told a few times that the roadster would go for 100k+right a way, so we stayed and saved the $ for our own roadster. It was a tough call.  oh well

Robbie:  The 76 liner was one of the cars that made the hair on my arms stand up when it went by.  It was something else that hemi thumping away.

The hair on the back of my neck still stands up on end remembering Al's car making a pass. I have seen others do 400 but the 76 will always be the one I remember. Thanks Al
