Sam Wheeler's group, including the #999 bike, has arrived at the start line. to begin prep.

A few minutes later, now -- they've started the engine are are putting a bit of heat into it.  Love the smell of alky wafting over the Salt.

Guys, a quick question...

on sheet 9-02-09 down run # 35 is listed as 210.7 mph.  Is the class correct as APS1350AF ?  I see that run # 25 a-ward is listed as APS1350AF as well and the speed was 225 mph.

But JB Racing #951 did a return backup run #64 at 212.7 to set a record?

I'm thinking that A-wards class is listed wrong on run #25 ?
Am I missing somthing?

Thanks

170.870 record return speed for 7911 -- I think that's the Norton 'liner.  Almost identical to down run speed -- oughta back it up.  Congratulations.

Wheeler's motor still idling over there.

I'm posting some photos into the Gallery during these interruptions -- if you've got time -- get some work done and come back in a little while.  Gotta recharge the battery on the laptop, too.

Busy, busy, . . .

Jim:

I don't know.  There's your real answer.  I do know that yesterday I had to wait a while to get the run logs from Rice Bros.  They said that a competitor had questioned one bit of the information, and had then been invited to visited the timing trailer to present his case to them for adjudication.  The protesting fella never arrived at the tower, so it was felt that he had not chosen to press his case.  Now - was this the same apparent mis-presentation of the class that you've noticed?  I dunno -- Rice Bros. did not fill me in -- let the sleeping dog lay, I guess.

I'll try to find A-Ward and see if they've got anything on the situation.  They're not here at the long int'l start right now.

Wheeler's engine was blipped a few times after that long idle and now is off.  The bike is still on the transporter.

No other bikes leaving this start line at the present.

Here's the latest, following a chat with Denis and Terry Kizer:

The Bub bike's run was aborted because the skids wouldn't retract.  They're back here, the chute is repacked, and they're in the queue to make a run.  It's back in the trailer right now -- I presume to be moved to starting position.

Terry says that last night they didn't "take it to town for a car wash".  That is -- they felt the chain stretched too much on the 282 mph run and wanted to change chains.  It's an hours-long job -- and they didn't think they'd be allowed to stayon the Salt that long after closing time, so they'd have to go to town to do the late-nighter.  While there -- they might as well wash it at the car wash.  Well, they were allowed to stay out here -- 'til 2AM, I hear, and go the chain work done.  So now the bike is down here at the start and waiting for a run, just like Bub.

The Bub bike is rolling out of the trailer as I click "post".

Added later:  The tow rope is attached to the bike.  About a dozen people clustering around it.  Apparently Chris is in the bike -- looks like they're adjusting straps.  An official is checking wind speed.

Runs are continuing on the regular courses, and there are two down here awaiting their turn -- but I guess the 'liners will go first.  It's difficult to give you much information off the FM radio -- it's quite static-y, and there are two announcers, each with his own microphone -- and the volume levels are way different -- when you can hear one okay - the other is just a whisper.

Bub is still setting up, Sam is still on the transporter.  Crowd is moving away from the bike.  What's that mean?

Bub is picking up speed, shifting into second with a pop of the turbos.

At the three looks good, gaining speed.

Booking along in the measured mile.

Hope all is well with Chris and the chute.
355MPH  :-o
That's within range for a backup run isn't it? (353mph puts them within 2% of the record right?).
Man, I had goosebumps reading up to through the run... awesome job Jon!

That 2% number is correct, right?  I don't know for sure -- and would be intereting in having it confirmed, just so we don't put out false hopes for the team.

Rick Gold closes up shop at noon today -- but your fuel now, racers!

Todd -- did you ever manage to figure out how to get some race gas to your shop for tuning?

Announcer:  Course closes at 3PM, and riders are encouraged to get their qualifier runs done in time to take full advantage of the FIM two-hour turnaround time.  But that's only an encouragement -- run whenever, but if you can't make the return before 3 you're S.O.L.

#999 is on the ground at the 1/2 mile, readying for start.
