Class Change?
« on: August 04, 2009, 03:57:07 PM »
I've read in the rule book that racers are allowed to change classes at the track.  I've seen several instances where the same vehicle holds multiple becords set at the same event in different engine breaks.  The times are often different as in the example listed below.  How exactly does this work?  Are vehicles allowed to run up in class or are they really that fast at engine swaps.

Ex:
"Classic Unblown Gas Coupe - /CGC
9217 AA/CGC BrooksRacing Roy Brooks Jun-07 171.513
9217 A/CGC Brooks Racing Roy Brooks Sep-08 189.440
9217 B/CGC Brooks Racing Roy Brooks Sep-08 190.456"

Thanks,
Daniel

No.  They don't swap engines between runs.  They run the same engine and just change the class.

Roy Brooks' Camaro is one example but several regular runners hold multiple records with cars that are running smaller engines.

ECTA allows vehicles to "RUN UP" in class with engines that would otherwise (like at SCTA events) not be able to qualify for other classes.  This was started way back when the ECTA was just starting out and due to popularity among the entrants it has remained in place.

It works like this . . A car with a 2 litre engine would be classed as a G engine class car.  Let's say that car runs 140 mph.  If there is a record under 140 mph in a higher engine class ( let's say the D class) that the car can run in . .  the G class entrant can change classes and go after that record.

There have been discussions on this board from time to time arguing the merits or faults of this policy.  There is no horse so dead it can't still be beaten so I suspect this thread will bring out the usual suspects with the usual arguments.  My take on it is . . . if your blown fuel 1000 HP 500 cubic inch car gets beaten by a fuel injected 265 CI small block on pump gas, shame on ya.

Probably the eaisest way to explain it is that the rules for displacement breaks are actually for engines "up to" a maximum displacement.  I don't think it is written that way (don't have an 09 rule book) but that is how it is done.  The same deal applies to blown classes.  Unblown cars can run for blown records.  And when it comes right down to it, gas burning cars can run for fuel records.

You can only change 'body classes if you have actually changed the body to be legal in the other body class.  Example would be covering up the headlights and grill to move to the Altered body class.

From a purely practical standpoint, this is a way for the ECTA to draw a little more revenue because class changes require a fee.  That inturn helps the track stay open so we can race.  Nobody is getting rich here so every little bit helps...

I think the current rules to allow "up motor class"  is good for everyone,,, The fans, The Racers and the ECTA..

More revenue for the club, more potential records for the racers and more potential runs for the fans to see.  win, win win....

I love it when everyone benefits...

Hmm... I guess the guy with a 350 SBC in C class would not feel the same if a D class 302 SBC beat his record... but that happens...

Drive Fast, Have Fun , Be Safe   and if you set a few records !! Oh well that is OK too.

Maybe a little more accurate/consistent timing without the extra cam length flex to the drive gear?

Ford:

Finest

Device
I used to work at a Ford dealership, selling 'em.  I needed to have postive comebacks to the nasty ones.

Then there was the acronym for Pontiac -- but it's so Politcallyincorrect that I will not repeat it except in person.  Kinda like the one for the big national-size trucking company -- J. B. Hunt.
