How to paint plastic?
« on: July 28, 2009, 12:22:39 PM »
I bought a mini-ATV to use as a pit bike. However it is red and I want it to be yellow. It has plastics that are the greasy-feeling type, so I imagine painting them is a problem. Is there a primer I can use that will stick to it, then use my regular auto paint over it? I know whatever paint I use will have to be flexible. What do the auto shops use to paint the plastic parts of cars?
Thanks,
Don

Ask your paint supplier for plastic prep/cleaner. Scuff with a gray scuff pad. Add flex agent to your paint.

I have had good luck with a product called 'Bulldog" from the auto paint store, it promotes adhesion to plastic /urethane. Some pro painters say there is enough flex agents in modern paint that you do not need it, but I like the advertised "adhesion" of the bulldog

Krylon fusion spray paint is formulated just for plastic and would make an inexpensive, easy to use primer. Available at most autoparts stores.
