One of the suggested explanations for the strange chute behavior

is that the shape of the car has the air exiting the car in a manner

that doesn't allow the chute to open as expected. Such a simple

statement. Some may say, "certainly that's what the influence is

but maybe it's a trade off between good air flow over the car and

nothing there to open the chute."  I offer no solution.

A trade off between good air over the car making poor air for the

chutes.

Could be --- The damaged chute, spinning CCW necessarily will impart a CW flow in the near field around it.  The second chute, flying in that near field flow will be influenced by that flow to move in it in a CW direction.

There are lots of similarities between 550 & the Herbert-Steen liner & I'm not surprised at all to see the undamaged chute fly higher as the speed comes down, it's just the shape of the beast. It looked to me that chute one bit the ground in the dead air as it deployed doing the damage. The spin is obviously the air imbalance & it just wasn't catching enough air to fly with it's twin.

So what would be the work around? Fire chutes in an upward and outward manner?

Create dirty air when chutes deploy? Like a flap or air brake?

Crackerman, I talked to Marlo about these problems. I think a small drogue may help unsettle the air, but I also think the aero trail may come together where the chute is trying to blossom. Of course, as has been said many times, without testing, all I have is an opinion.....

On the Herbert-Steen liner we put two rows of vortex generators on each side to help pull the air around the tail & went to a bigger pilot to catch more air with a stronger spring to launch it further with a longer bridal line. It worked for that but doesn't mean it will work for this.
The pilot needs to get out of the dead air to work right. A problem can arise with a tube chute system if it's not packed tight enough, the pounding during the run can unload the pilot spring ending in a weak launch. One way around that situation is to pack the pilot in it's own container plus by doing that you can shoot it into the clean moving air. Too longer bridal line length can allow the pilot to hit the ground & beat it's self to death while main is still flying, that gets expensive at about 100 bucks a pop.

My time is full for about eleven days.

Then I plan to go to Treit's hanger and

gather some more info. That will allow

me to do a sensible post. I miss frequent

posts as much as You do. During the

build time I had my assignments

planned for me each week. Now it is

all so different. I have to dig to get

info for a post and sometimes that

means really scratching. No building

and no racing.  What to tell??  No

real idea. I have ask SSS to invited

me to a day and a night in the life

of Slim and energetic Nancy. I don't

imagine that cameras would be

allowed in the inner sanctum. I

may have to do it by feel.

Ah, Freud, are we so transparent to you?  You've managed to figure out that way back when -- I used to get the Braille edition of Playboy. Whoo-hoo!!!

As for a camera up in the playroom -- well, I try, but just last night I went up there with camera in hand and they'd closed the door on me.  Indeed!  Sorry -- you'll just have to imagine. :-D :-D :-D

I think I found your vision.

Looking at the 2013 SpeedWeek Program cover, Nancy seems to be paying homage to her favorite unusual old friend.

When Marlo returned following World of Speed with two broken

quickchange drive shafts he immediately tore down. There were

several confrences with engineers about the solutions. This involved

metal structure, size and shapes of the shafts. It was about a week

before he ordered the shafts.  Now the good news............. they

arrived a day before Christmas. I have absolutely no idea what took

so long. I still haven't been to Marlo's shop. As soon as I go I will

make a post and explain all I can. I doubt that I will have answers

about the manufacturing delay.

Happy New Year to all of You.
