The cancellation of Speed Week following the Test and Tune cancellation has

certainly changed the plans for Treit and Davenport. Since Marlo's intentions

are to run at every scheduled event the work plans are somewhat in limbo.

The car is ready to run. Support vehicles always need maintenance and there

are  plenty of  "spur of the moment" things to do.  Just expect to

see the 'liner at any event that allows an adequate track for the potential

of the car to be tested.

Keep the faith,

Reading all thes posts makes me a little sad about Speedweek. Really bummed to not see the 550 car roar down the salt for a second year in a row. I'm going to keep making plans until I get to see this beast show whats it and the driver has!!!

If seeing the Treit and Davenport run compels you, just watch this diary.

I'll post when we are leaving for the salt and what our plans are to run.

If there is a course available we have possibly two more testing runs to make

before it gets serious. It takes much of a day to get ready after the car is pitted.

The test runs will be interesting to watch. At this time there is no reason to think

the first pass won't be above 350 MPH. If it's all well probably another 50 MPH will

be added on the next run. After that step is accomplished serious speeds are soon to

happen. So You will have the same information regarding the course condition. The same

people inform us that inform all the web sites. When a course is available we will be on

our way. So now You know what we know. I guess it's guaranteed that you will be attending.

2015 Finished..........a few months ago.

Here is the most recent update from Marlo Treit.

After the 2014 damage to the Target 550 car during testing it went back to

Jim Hume's for some panel work. The body was then stripped of what was

left of the finish and a fresh wrap was applied by Canby Graphics.

The supercharger problems that we encountered in July 2014 were resolved

by Les Davenport. He made the needed modifications. We assembled a new

engine and installed it in our "mule" stand and in June took it up to Winton Alberta,

and ran it on Les' dyno with both of the modified Whipples to determine if they

were really fixed. They are fine. The data was almost exactly the same as previous

tests since all of the engines use the same parts.

We were invited to be in the Grand Opening of the World of Speed Museum in

Wilsonville, OR. We left the car there for several weeks following the opening.

Our display included the Tribute double engine Triumph motorcycle built for

Triumph of America, Rufus, the model A pickup and the Bonneville/Dry Lakes

roadster #471 that we restored for Gil Ruiz. We enjoyed the experience and

certainly recommend attending this marvelous new museum.
 USFRA scheduled

a Test and Tune in July. We made all the necessary arrangements to be there.

Trucks, trailers and people all rolled out for the event. An hour and a half after

we left the call came that told us that a rainstorm flooded the salt flats. There

were still other meets scheduled that would allow us to do our testing. We were

ready all summer but the salt gods said, 'no way,"
in 2015.
 The #471 roadster

was taken out of the museum and dyno tested to run at El Mirage in the October meet.

Dick Milne was to drive it. When we were less than 100 miles from El Mirage a

freak storm washed out highway 58 South of Bakersfield and flooded El Mirage.

We returned home and made plans to run the November meet at El Mirage. We

teched for that meet and Dick was in line to make his rookie runs. This turned

out to be the largest meet ever at El mirage: close to 200 entries. Dick made

his first pass and we waited in line for his second run. It was cold and windy

but he started his second run, 150-175 MPH window, when the storm hit. He

shut off early and the dust storm closed the meet. The word was to vacate the

site because of the danger of a flash flood. What's happening? This is a dry lake bed.......

Visibility was sometimes less than 10 feet. The distance to the paved road is 4

miles and it took 90 minutes to get there.
Our trip home was uneventful but long.

We stopped at the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, California and at Don Nuss'

shop in Crescent City. We enjoyed both stops.
We were all dressed up and ready

to dance when the music stopped.

No one can predict the next adventure in "Salt Flats Racing."

All of the scheduled meets for 2016 are marked on the calendar,

If they happen we will see You there.

Nice to see the update. Keeping fingers crossed that this year will be a little more "user friendly" than last for the land speed racing community.

I plan to be at the museum when the car is picked up March 21st.

I'll see if I can deliver the story of how many cars have to be moved

to get it out. It's a major chore since it's display location is as far

from the entry door as is possible.

The car is ready but this will lead to a comprehensive inspection to

guarantee being ready for any Test and Tune that may happen.

I have had no word about the trip Les Davenport took to Australia.

I know that Marlo will talk to him soon and when I know so will everyone.

That's about all I can report.

OK Tim:

What is there to report when nothing is happening?

The car has been in the World of Speed Museum several times.

It's a major chore for both Treit and the museum to display

it. Arrangements have been made for it to be displayed at

the Oregon State Fair at the end of August. With no racing

runs there is no information that would suggest changes that

would benefit the car. Approaching two years since it ran anything

suggested from prior runs has been done. When it's covered with

a wrap dust doesn't even become a problem.

When Les returned from Australia he was certainly impressed with

the condition of the course. Had the car been there he would have

willingly been "hammer down."

Right now is the time to acknowledge the effort that the racers from

Australia and New Zealand have extended to run at B'Ville. When we

have to face the shipping problems it becomes a big deal. When they

are the ones that have faced the problems it doesn't mean much to us.

We are finding that it is a major situation. Just finding the "certified"

wood to build crates is a problem that we aren't normally faced with.

Don't use the proper wood and You don't even open them. Just protecting

the metal from rust is an absolute must but how do get the numerous

hidden pieces covered?  You will certainly find out what You missed when

you get there. We think Wendover is remote. I assure you that Gairdner is.

Whatever the conditions at Bonneville turn out to be this year preparations

for a trip to Australia are a must. Solving the problems that will come up and

aren't even in the thought process will be a challenge.

So how much do I really know about the future for Target 550? Not a lot.

Marlo doesn't call me each day and tell me what he has done investigating

a trip down under.

When you talk to your friends who have made the trip, let me know the answers.

Freud, thank you for the update!  Very informative, as usual, much more so than 'radio silence'...

Apologies if I somehow touched a nerve. Having to stand by while such a great investment in time, money, and effort sits idle must be massively frustrating, not only for the T550 team but for all the other racers who ask only for an appropriate course on which to compete.

That said, for better or worse, the 'Treits Streamliner' post is pinned to the top of the Build Diaries forum and you seem to have assumed the role of team spokesperson - in this forum, anyway.  So now we have an update! :)

Bottom line, it is great to hear some news, even if you think it is not news, including some perspective on the trials and commitment of the folks Down Under who somehow make it to the American West to run.  Thanks again!
