It takes a ton of talent just to make a plywood buck, let alone build an alum or steel skin to fit it.

I think you call call it Magic

Hi Rex

I thought Danny got funding from MT tires to run the car this year?

I got to see his car after Randy Schoville restored the car for ' The Duner ' but it was lacking for money too and just sat for a long time.

Neat car nice to see being raced now!!

I think Danny got $300K from MT Tires and of course product which at $5-600 each can run into some real money but $300K isn't enough to do what was required and then run the car too.  The last time I talked to DT, at Bonneville in August, he was still looking for more money, but it is a race car they just adsorb money. My bet is on Danny being on the Salt next year and probably going pretty fast.

I THINK THOSE GUYS THAT HAVE THE FEEL TO FORM METAL ARE THE BEST.

I'll stop shouting now. I did that because those same guys are all profoundly deaf. All those guys were like the poor guy in the picture with no hearing protection.

You think that blown V8 is loud? There is a huge amount of force needed to flow the metal, and all of that stuff hanging off acts as an amplifier. It takes thousands of hits to form a large piece.

The artistic/engineering sides of the brain rarely cross over, but to form metal you have to have both. The eye to see a beautifully shaped fender that is a flat piece of sheet metal sitting in front of you. The engineer to calculate stretching that thin piece even thinner to get that shape without screwing it up.

The old saying, "How do you get to Broadway" with the answer being "Practice, practice, practice" fits here. Nobody is any good shaping when they first start. "You do that how?"
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

Freud, don't fear the metal arts dying out. I know lots of guys in their 20-40s that are approaching some of the vaunted levels of past pros. If you watch some of the metal threads on the HAMB and Metalmeet you will have a warm fuzzy. Zach Suhr is one young fabricator from the PA area that comes to mind.

This is the driver's-eye view from the seat of the Target 550 streamliner. I asked if I could sit in it, Marlo said, "No problem." I got in (from a stepladder...it's way up on stands) and he asked if I was claustrophobic. Nope. He closed the canopy and there I was with a camera and a fish-eye lens. Absolutely fantastic!

No, I didn't make "vroom-vroom" noises. At my age they're not as much fun as they used to be. But being inside there sure got me pumped up for the test runs...whenever they're gonna be.

Everything is perfect but the steering wheel looks too small for a 500 mph car

Just kidding, what a total work of art Jim and the guys have built!!

Yup.  They're moccasins.  Thanks all for the good words.  It was one heck of a special thing for me to be able to get that photo.

We just got back from Marlo's hanger.

He had a full house and still managed to chat with most of us.

Thank you for the hospitality and a look at history in the making.

It's nice that you could make it Don.

I pulled "support duty" at  the hotel for anyone that needed a hand.

Sorry I wasn't there to meet everyone.

Glad that you were able to attend.

The tail is nearing the final stage of finish.  About 1/4 of the left side needs to be filed, both sides

will be finished with 150 grit paper and the bottom section will be filed.

Check out one of the last posts that will be shot at Hume's shop.

Here is the url:  http://www.target550.com/gallery/209_humes_last_piece/index.html

Enjoy it.
