Mapquest will give you some gas mileage numbers -- but I'd prefer the ability to input speed.  As for knowing when I get there - by being there -- yes, I allow that's correct, but I'd also like the ability to get good information to tell someone how to get to me - and give a reasonable estimate of how long it'll take him to get here.  I'll keep looking.

Maybe this otta get spun off to its own thread.  I've been looking at Navigation Apps for Android phones (I have an HTC Android) and there's a list of the 10 best Nav Apps:
http://www.inman.com/news/2012/01/16/top-10-android-navigation-apps  I've just reinstalled Waze (I had to remove it cuz I ran outta space..then I moved some stuff to the sd card and now....)

Anyway, I can't remember if you have an iPhone or just a stone-age "talk-only" phones :-D but it might be worth looking into.

I have been involved with this project from the very beginning.

I have seen it go together and grow but this past week has been

more exciting than anything that has ever occurred.

Last Friday the engines were started. The drive system engaged

and the tires and wheels turned just as they will when the start

of the first record run happens. I wasn't there when it happened

but the excitement in Marlo's voice when he called me was beyond any

bounds I have so far experienced. This post is a small part of the preparation

for that giant step forward. I'll be presenting the events over the next month as

best as I can.  Here is part of the story leading up to "fire up" and the next time also.

Here is the url:  http://www.target550.com/gallery/197_prep_for_running/index.html

Have fun and I'll do my best to bring all of you along to the testing for the first runs.

There are many new things on the horizon. Be ready to be surprised.

Glenn, when I first fired the motor in my Tank everything stopped being a bunch of assembled parts and it did a "car activity".  8-) Wayno

Marlo sent this to me (and others) in an email this morning.

"Sunday at 3:40 the front motor came to life in the car.  At 5 PM the second motor did the same.  No bangs, no rattle and no shake.
It was a MILESTONE day.  Dec 9 2012.  About 14 years and over 60,000 hours, yes 60,000 that I can account for at this time.  Not one wasted.
All it had to do was please me.
m/t
p/s more as the story continues."

Ah, the fun of such a giant leap, hey?  Congratulations to Marlo and his team of dedicated crew.  Wonderful work, great results - so far.

Freud:

Thank you for the exciting post. Firing the motors is like hearing twin babies cry for the first time.

Congrats to Marlo and the Target 550 team.

Thanks for the update Freud and Slim

It isn't Friday but Ray and I have a new post ready.

It relates to modifications to the blowers.

Les Davenport and Bob Harris came from Calgary, Canada to

assist with the needed work. There will be another post in less than

a week.

Here's the url:   http://www.target550.com/gallery/198_fabrication_blower_mounting/index.html

The engines had not run when these images were done.

With the car at Treit's place in Oregon I make certain that I get as many images as possible on any trip.

This is the second post from my first visit down there. It is a 488 mile round trip. Les Davenport and Bob Harris

came the Calgary, Alberta, Canada area to lend a hand. Bob Harris had the shop that anodized the Orville and

Wilbur knobs that can kill the ignition from inside the cockpit. It was a lot of help having them on site.

Much of this post is about the blowers. there will be even more regarding the fuel system in this next post.

I'll try to get it done before Christmas.

Thanks for your interest.

Or you can go to www.target550.com.

See you soon.

Freud, you HAD to be excited to hear about the engines firing! I looked, but I don't see a video of the event! They did video it, didn't they??!!
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead. -- RFC 1925

You can't make a race horse out of a pig. But if you work hard enough at it you can make a mighty fast pig. - Bob Akin

SO SORRY    NO VIDEO........these dudes are racers. It's up to someone else to document the happenings.

Davenport and Harris will be returning to Oregon shortly after the first of 2013. I know they

will fire up then and I'll be on hand w/a video camera. I was excited just to hear that they had

run them. I hate missing the event as much as everyone else does.
