Friday is travel day for me. I have been the fotog for Dry Lakes Racers Hall of Fame for 11 years.

The event is Saturday in Buellton, California and is put on by the Goldcoast Roadster and Racing Club.

It is one of the SCTA family of clubs.

Ray Therat will make certain that the post will be done. He will then add the url for the pictures on this build diary.

You can always just go to www.target550.com and the link to the post is at the top of the page.

Have fun with the site and we will be back to normal next week.

Let us know when you are going to test... I will make time to be there. I've been following this build all along, and feel like it's one of my kids. I want to see this baby take its first steps!

In my opinion it will be early fall before the testing starts.

The fotos will let everyone know.

I want to be there at Bonneville when Treit's liner pulls up to tech inspection and they say, "Get outa' here...we've already seen this thing!"

Thanks to the quality of this build thread, I can see where they might say that!

It probably wouldn't pass SCTA tech.

It's taken so long that oxidation has probably eaten  it all up.

We should have started later.  LOL

I'll let everyone know as soon as I know. I can tell you this.

It feels like it's really rolling along now. I hate to miss doing fotos this week.

I will have missed a lot of small parts going together that all contribute to the build.

Ray will have a post tomorrow.

Thanks for your interest.  It adds excitement for me knowing that others are waiting to see the progress.

Update 170 is on the server: Skin, Cherry rivets, dual purpose drain/vent and painted panels.

Hmmm.  Cherry Rivets.  I think I dated her in high school.  Anyway, as usual, it's getting closer and closer.  Here's the link:

Ohh.....here's a photo of Jim Hume looking somewhat pensive.  I wonder if he's trying to figure out where my 7/8" deep impact socket went.  I spent plenty of time searching and wondering.  I found it right after I came home with the new one.  I think he's a little better organized than I am.

Thanks Freud and Ray.

Nice photos and explanations.

This helps with my race withdrawal symptoms.

It seems to me that the combination drain/vent line is a problem waiting to happen. With the opening of the line submerged in lube, any expansion of the air inside the unit due to heat, or even atmospheric pressure changes, will force lube up the tube and out. The vent really should be well above the lube level, and separate from the drain.
Ah, this is obviously some strange usage of the word 'safe' that I wasn't previously aware of.  Douglas Adams

The vent really should be well above the lube level, and separate from the drain.

The vent end is at least 6 inches (maybe 9) above the top fluid level.  And while the expansion you mention is a real possibility, I think the idea is that the length of the tube will be sufficient to account for said expansion.  However, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see a catch can or other method of containing any overflow.  We'll kinda have to wait until Freud checks in to see what he knows about it.

I think it's true, but I also think Hume's trying to disprove the theory.  :)

This build just amazes me! I keep going back through it, because I pick something up I missed everytime!
