Dean, I really THANK YOU for such an in depth primer on something that some of us take for granted.
You covered all the bases and showed the respect for "back to the basics" machine work. I know about
the luxury of CNC but it's not in this shop. The more a person knows of his craft the less complicated the machine needs
to be. Hume's mill and lathe are ancient but they get the job done when massaged by Dave Jeffers. They are not
as fast as computer controlled machines but they also aren't as expensive.

I have no idea what my next post will cover. It will be 2 weeks since I was up there. A lot has happened and I'll try
to catch up. I hate to miss a week. Things are built completely in that time and I can not show the steps required to
accomplish them.
If you have suggestions on how I can improve the posts, let me know. I appreciate all of you that access this diary.

Four of the Target 550 team members were spotted at Salt Talks, 2011 by Thomas "Pork Pie" Graf.  Glenn Freudenberger, Ray Therat, Marlo Treit and Dick Milne in front of Jon and Nancy Wennerberg's trailer. We all had a great time at the Salt Talks (hosted every year by Jon and Nancy)...well, until the wind, lightning and rain kinda put a damper on things. |

Joe, with the cost of gold skyrocketing as it is, it's probably about on a par with Marlo's car.
It's Marlo's insight that conceived this project and has supported it to it's present state of "nearing completion."
We are happy that Pork Pie snapped the image when he did.
It was before our shirts got wet.

Ray Therat has decided to remodel houses and repair and paint motorcycle fenders and he won't be home until later.
I just notified USPS to deliver my welfare checks to the Kilo Klub.
Now I need to find a place to cash them in Wendover.

Freud,
Time for the "hydraulics guy" in me to nit pick again. The oil reservoir: I am assuming that there is a baffle (or baffles) down the center of the tank and that the return lines all dump their oil on the back side of the baffle and below the "operating" oil level and that the oil for the inlet to the pressure section of the oil pump is on the other side of the baffle and that any oil that goes to it has to travel over the baffle before it gets to the pump inlet. This movement of the oil will cause the entrapped air, of which there will be lots!, to be drawn off into the vent tank, other wise you are pumping air to the engine and it has no lubrication properties. Also glad to see they put a "clean out" cover on the reservoir, makes it easy to get the misc. engine parts out when one goes "bang!". (Which is also a great reason to run all of the oil from the scavenger sections through a return filter.)
