Actually the tank that Hume is fabrication is aluminum but note how he has radiused the edges of the end plates, this make the weld joint a butt weld not one where the two pieces of metal are at 90 degrees and a sharp edged corner, which makes a really ugly weld unless you happen to be making the tank from 1/8 or thicker material. Also this makes a much stronger corner joint. I know that this is pretty much standard practice for guys like Hume but it should be a good lesson for anyone trying to make a tank for the first time. An additional plus is that the tank will be just another of the hundreds of exceptionally "neat" piece that have been built for this project.

Thank You, Rex.

I always hope that there is a 'lesson" accompanying the images I post.

I'll show the welds next time.

The exceptional seems to be the ordinary for this project.

Mr. Therat --

That trailer is ruining your established image.

Stan

Well, lemme see if I can re-establish it.  Here's my beater Camaro (V6, 5-speed grocery getter/parts runner.)  I bought it (after it passed thru a coupla hands) from a towing/storage auction.  It's beat to hell, but it (now) runs nicely and is kinda fun to run around it...even if it has a Red Green Special front end fix (red duct tape.) until I can find a front clip at a wrecking yard.

You got that right, Sparky.  It's a hard worker, not a "trailer queen."

very nice build.

reply  # 760 , third pic--
              1) brass valve is  threaded in the frame. what type of valve (?) is welded on right side of pic?
             2) how much of the frame can be pressurized from that point?

The entire frame is accessed from that valve. Every tube has a hole drilled in the frame before it is welded. It allows a totally pressurized frame but

more important is the quality of weld that results. Without that hole the weld will blow back as it is completed.

There is only one valve stem. The other piece is a body panel attachment piece.

The top fuel and funny car guys pressurize their frames as well. It's a super way to find cracks in places other then welds.

Do they have a monitoring system that checks the pressure in the frame, or do they check it manually?

Freud;

Porsche pioneered using pressure to check for cracks in their aluminum tube chassis of the 917. That was in the very early '70s.

Nexx..............there are still welds that are not finished. The system is in place but can not be used until all the welds are finished.

It is a static system. No method of monitoring it from the cockpit.

Thanks for asking.
