Not surprising. Infrared thermometers are calibrated against a white calibration target. Color and surface texture strongly affect the reading. Some can be re-calibrated against a reference target that is a different color value. If you want accuracy you need a contact thermocouple.  |

Dean; IR thermometers are calibrated against a BLACK target. They measure energy that is radiated from a hot surface; the amount of energy depends on the absolute temperature of the surface and on its emissivity. A perfect (emissivity = 1.0) IR emitter is called a "blackbody radiator". It helps to spray a spot with flat black paint so that its emissivity is closer to 1.0. This way the measured temperature is closer to being correct. Professional IR non-contact temp measurement guns have an adjustable "emissivity" knob which corrects the reading. I just won't remember what you said.
Once an acceptable temp is achieved and that measurement is used from then on, it matters not that it is properly calibrated.
In photography unconventional exposure readings are valid as long as the same conditions exist each time it is metered.
It could be the same in this situation.
D A M N E D the theory as long as it works.

Thanks Neil. I knew that. My sister used to tell me to engage brain before thinking. Shhhh! I'm also doing this at work while I'm doing other things.
The company I worked for was trying to determine the temperature of an aluminum wheel to flow form it. Differences in heat treat color made a huge difference in the temperature reading. We switched to a contact probe. The amount of torn and cracked wheels went down dramatically.
