Freud told me that it's a mixture of fine powder (substance unknown at this time) and kerosene or mineral spirits. It's applied with a 3/4" brush. Then the model is placed in the wind tunnel and where the liquid doesn't evaporate shows up as a dark spot and is considered to be an area that isn't part of the flow layer surface...like a low spot. I think I got that right.

I talked to Marlo and was filled in with the details about slurry.
The main ingredient is Diatomaceous Earth. It is mixed with Jet A fuel and applied with the brush.
A substitute for Diatomaceous Earth is finely ground chalk board chalk. It's easier to buy Diatomaceous Earth.
In several instances just a specific area of the models was tested.
The 100 HP electric motor moves the air enough that the temp of the air raises 10F per minute. One result is that the JetA
evaporates more rapidly. The second is that the calculations must be adjusted as the air temp rises.
Diatomaceous Earth can be bought in large quantities if you want to paint your car and see the air flow characteristics as you
drive down the road. It's available in pallet size quantities.

In the the drilling industry, we used to use a brand of diatomaceous called Mother Earth.When our brakes got wet, or started to slip, we would dust them with the stuff. Barite also worked, and was similar in consistency. |

This is another example of small items taking a lot of time, but when they are done correctly the first time, maybe they will never have to be revisited. Doc & Ray, THANKS----how do you guys feel, as the WINDOW through which we mere mortals get to peep at such a masterpiece being created by such artisans! This build will be studied for a long time not only for what it may or may not have done in the future---but if for no other reason for the simple way in which very complex things maybe addressed & done. THANKS to Marlo for dreaming big and Hume for striving for perfection on the small! |
