Stan, if Lynda doesn't mind my interruption:

Yup -- you can go straight (well, it's really a tad to the left) and the Bend in the Road and up the road a ways and camp there, too.  There's higher ground within the first half-mile or so, and a couple of roads that go off to the north/east that climb higher still.  It's common to see an RV or campsite or two up there.  It's not crowded at all, and, in case of rain -- you'll still be able to drive out.

We'll be placing porta-potties and a garbage rolloff pretty close to the Bend per se, but not up the road -- so if you're needful of those amenities you'll want to park close to 'em.  Otherwise -- have at it -- you've got hundreds of dry acres of scrubby brush, a bunch of rocks and gravel, and no doubt some creatures that sting or slither as company.  No, I'm not talking about other racers. . .

If I were camping at the Bend I would bring a tow rope or chain and point my rig toward the road were you could be winched or towed out if a thunder shower hit or drive out with less problems.

If I were camping across the bend up the road I would bring a shovel or blocks to level with.

   Have fun JL222 cheers

JL222, you're right about the tow rope.  I always have a tow strap or two in my pickup, which is a 4x4, and it has been used to pull vehicles out of the mud at the Bend.  I'd be happy if everyone that needs towing -- had their own strap/rope, so I wouldn't have to go so far into the muck with my pickup.  And you're also right -- point it towards the exit road/access point -- so I don't have to try to drag the vehicle around a corner or over a berm.

A couple of years ago, as we were slogging through the wet, I saw Skip Higginbotham walking around wearing rubber boots -- like the concrete workers wear.  He told me that he always has 'em in his race trailer -- just in case.  Ever since that -- I carry a pair of 'em, too.  Nancy doesn't mind going barefoot in the saltwater.  I don't care for it.  Suum cuique.

A month or so ago I was thinking of doing some other vacationing during our time in the west and was planning on taking the canoe with us in the trailer.  I asked Todd if he'd like to fab up a mount for the canoe -- and he was worried that I knew something in advance -- that the canoe would be needed at the Salt.  You shoulda heard his reaction...
