1 inch lug nuts for Aluminum wheels
« on: June 27, 2009, 09:58:32 AM »
How are most of us complying with the rule?
The A-S-Streamliner has racing wheels that require a centering shank.
Lug Nut Specs:

    * Overall Length 1.240"
    * Shank Length .550"
    * Shank Diameter .680"
    * Uses 13/16" Socket
    * 1/2 20 thread

We thought of making them since we can't find any or maybe making a retaining ring...
Any ideas?

I thought with aluminum wheels you were asked to use a large washers or a retaning plate. This is what I run.

Motorstate Distributing aka Lane Automotive has them in 7/16 1/2-20 and 5/8"

My new wheels and hubs use hub centric and lug centric wheel location if we look at how close the tolerances are.
Aluminum alloy wheel does require a 1/4" steel washer between the lug nut and wheel which kind of negates the use of tapered seat nuts.
I'll post photos on Monday if you like....I use a 304 SS plate and 12 point 1/2-20 grade 8 nuts.

I re read your note and the proper response is the 1" hex nuts are only required on steel wheels designed for a tapered seat.
The wheels on my Merk were like yours in that it a "Mag" wheel shoulder nut.  Due to wheel thickness I shortened some existing lug nuts from one of the then wheel manufacturers and used a SS plate.
It worked well and was used on the front of the Merk every year that I raced it.
The Ford space saver wheels served me well on a 4200 pound car.  My engineering source at Ford verified that the spacesaver wheels meet the same dot specs as normal production stuff.  And are tested just like normal steel and alloy rims.

A-S
     We got ours from Ken Huff (wheel manufacturer in the Rule Book). They measure .691 Dia. (chrome plated 11/16 I imagine) by .732 long shank. I inch hex, 1/2-20 thread. We use a steel plate like in Rich's picture.

Thanks guys, trying to sort out the liner, in Denver and using Johnboy's login because we could not log him out.  If we read the rules correctly, we could use either 1 inch lugnuts with a thick washer or the ring like Rich's picture and the lugs we had.  Chose the ring and JB whipped them out on the mill today.  I have to go home tomorrow afternoon.  Liner is getting closer, will try to post some pics in the build thread when I get home
Thanks everyone
