SFI 45.1 and sfi 45.2
« on: June 20, 2009, 11:37:26 PM »
To comply with the rule chages in 3.B.2 & 3.C .
I ordered a sheet of flat SFI padding, for (the head rest 3.C requirement) to comply with [3.B.2 ---in the proximity of the drivers helment] --  to my suprise it came is 45.1 instead of 45.2..---

in reading the SFI specs it appears to me the 45.1 might be a higher impact resistance---can we use flat 45.1, instead of 45.2 for head rest material on a flat surface :?

I thought you could use any kind of padding for the head rest on the seat.

The 45.1/45.2 is for rollcage structure pieces, not the seat headrest.

The "lateral movement structure" (3.A.3) requires SFI padding. While not specificaly addressed it would be smart to make the "headrest" padding the same.

McRat you are correct---but AS I REMEMBER,  we were told in the inspectors meeting that it was going to be interpeted  that if the helment could touch it - it was going to need to be SFI---including headrests.

I guess the point I was trying make is, I would use the 45.1 if that's what I have.

That is just my opinion.  I now use 45.2 padding to avoid tech problems, but I was told by a couple of inspectors that my high-density rubber padding was acceptable for whiplash protection.  That appears to have changed.  Thanks for the head's up!

McRat---that is not what I indicated---read the rules---as I read them you are ok on head rest with 45.2  I just was trying to find out if I could use the 45.1 since I now have it..

The stuff I have is 1" thick SFI 45.2 (little paper sticker) made by BSCI and sold by www.pegasusautoracing.com

It feels and looks just like the 45.1 stuff, and the sticker falls off.

FWIW we ordered some flat padding (through Summit) and it was 45.1, but that's embossed in the surface of the pad, repeatedly (Jaz brand IIRC).

McRat, thanks, I was wondering where you would get 45.2, I've done business with Pegasus before, good results then too.
Just happy to be here. :-D

If you have to shape that 45-2, the wire buffing wheel does a good job......quickly!

No, I think we are on the same page:

1)  If it were my car, and I had just 45.1, I personally would use it.

2)  When I was ordering other goodies, I also bought a pad of 45.2 and changed the non-SFI head pad to avoid any possible conflicts in tech.  It might save me some time in tech.
