Hi all;

Anyone remember a Lincoln Mercury Motorsports powered streamliner named, 'Longshot"? According to Nov 1981 Hot Rod Magazine ran about 262mph? I believe Ak Miller,Bill Edwards,and Don DeBring ran it?

Was painted the same colors as Jack Dolan/Doc Jeffries Ford Escort EXP that ran GT class. White in color. Possible Team Vehicles? Wondering what happened to this So Cal liner? Many thanks in advance. huh

The Longshot was owned and built by Don Debring. He was in the process of rebuilding the car about 10 years ago, but got terminaly ill and passed away before it was finished. His Wife sold the car and I think Jaz Products bought it. I lost touch with it after it sold.

"Got'Cha" was first run in 1974. Bill Temple entered both 2 clubs in 1976 with records in AA/BGR. At El Mirage 201.79 and Bonneville at 220.

In 1977 Greg Temple started driving "Got'Cha" and entered the El Mirage Dirty 2 club in 1979 @ 201.97. Greg went on to set two records at Bonneville, one in 1981 at 241.848, then in 1991 he set another record at 262.230

Bill and Greg were the first father and son to enter the El Mirage Dirty 2 club. They broke the D/BFR at Bonneville in 1981 @ 241 with top speed of 249. This record still stands today. In 1991 they set the A/BFR @ 262 which was later broke by Duane McKinney.

Don brought it out with a Fiat motor if I remember right... 1.5 or 2 liter... about 1980.  There should be a picture in the old Bonneville pics thread.  Don was a Lockheed aero guy, car went 225  with stock motor.  Faster the next year..

Jonny,

Here is the reason it was a Fiat motor. Don had a Fiat and it happened to get into an auto accident, but the motor was not hurt. So Don used what he had which was a Fiat.

The twin-cam 124 as I remember -- not a bad motor for its day.

The Fiat was cool but the Cosworth Escort motor was a lot better.

From what Rick said about cleaning out Don's collection after his death, there were very few engines Don didn't have.  They ran the 999 car with everything from an Offenhauser to the turbine with the necessary modifications to the engine bay to fit them all.

Don set the H/FS record in 1981 at 269.196. I think this was with his original power but I know he got into a deal, I think with Ford, (but not sure now) who supplied some other engines but I don't remember the upshot other than they took them back after he ran them. Perhaps was with one of these he set the above.  If you don't find a picture, look at Jim Knapp's "Barnyard Bomber" liner.  I built that car and the basic shape is identical to the Longshot. (Don gave me a set of his plans and I used the basic layout for mine with modifications for me and engine etc) The nose on mine is a bit longer and drooped slightly, where Don's car was shorter and symmetrically shaped with equal tapers side to side and top to bottom. Tail with push bar and chute were also very similar. Jim has added a small fin however.
