First timer wanting to run a stock vehicle
« on: March 24, 2009, 04:48:40 PM »
I plan to bring something faster to events later this year but was considering bringing a completely stock 2004 GTO to the April meet. It would be nice to run a meet in a vehicle that needs no attention.

I looked through the rules and I think it looks like it is ok with no modifications. I have a helmet and fire suit. I don't know how fast a GTO runs in the mile.

Can I run it as-is?

Full Face (current snell) Fire suit or Jeans and Long Sleeve Shirt, head sock and gloves, keep it under 135mph and you are Ok.
(you can ask the Tech folks, but I think you are OK)

Full face helmet (M2000 or SA2000) jeans, long sleeve shirt and keep it under 135mph and you are good to go.

Nope.  Run in Time Only (T/O) category and you are pretty much good to go with your street car.

Great. Thanks guys. See you there. I'm probably going to steal the wife's G35 rather than bring the GTO.

I'd like to get my 125-150mph license- that should be doable as long as the car will make a run in the 125-135 range right?

Aim for a timing slip showing 134.9 mph.  To get the "D" license you'll need a speed between 125 and 150 -- and Kieth likes the speed you run to be right between bottom and top.  But if you try for that 137.5 -- you're over the limit for a "street" car. . . so that's why I suggest aiming for that 134 or so.

Why, thank you, Charles.  I like to think of me as ... unh..mmm pedantic.

As for the speeds -- at Bonneville the racer is asked to make a run between the lower and upper limits of the class when on a licensing pass.  I never did a "license" at Maxton -- but I hear folks coming back from the rookie meeting/orientation that say the Keith has told them to try to stay right in the middle of the speeds.  Ergo I said what I said.

See you in a week.  We leave home Tuesday evening and arrive in Laurinburg two motels later -- Thursday at the end of the day.  We leave Maxton Sunday mid-day and get back to Skandia, Michigan, in time for bed on Tuesday.  2700 miles round trip.  Yee-hah, first road trip of the season. only three more to Maxton (we miss the September meet since we stay for WoS), three or four to Bonneville -- but we'll stay over a couple ot times so we can attend all five events.

CORRECTION:

The helmet must be M2000 or SA2000.
The M2005 or SA2005 requirement does not come into effect until April 2011.
