Yes, dry ice is available in West Wendover at Smith's grocery store.  It's "soft" dry ice -- consumer grade/temperature, not industrial strength/cold like you might get at a packing plant.  Smith's has a freezer unit (supplied by the dry ice company) right by the front door -- by the checkout lines.  I don't remember the price, and don't know how much they normally have on hand, but if you've got some information about your needs they'd most likely try to accommodate you.

The ice vendor is a national company -- Airgas or one of the other biggies.  They offer these across the nation (I know because I once thought of getting into the business -- until research showed they have it pretty much locked up (iced up?) since they're the wholesaler from whom I'd have to buy my inventory.  They don't like to sell it that way -- prefer to own the entire franchise.

But yes, dry ice is available in West Wendover.

Thanks Jon,

Dry Ice is just one refrigerant option for my ducted forced air cockpit cooler.

Charles,

We were thinking about a window A/C and generator in the back of the truck with a duct running to the cockpit.
Just some thoughts.

That would take up more room and more equipment.

My design would mount in the golf cart and use a 4 to 6 inch flex duct and only use two 6"  DC truck driver fans or a squirrel cage fan.

why not get a Preconditioned Air Unit from an airport ... diesel powered trailer ... most are about the size of the Vickie unfortunately.

Joe,  that is kind of big and takes power to run it,,, If my design moves enough COLD air (cfm) it is much more compact and can run off a 12 volt deep cycle marine battery.  Cost not counting the consumable (dry ice) would be under $150 to build the unit... That is if it works,,,, and I think it will....

I'm sure someone out there has a picture of Rick Vesco's air conditioner...  It is a small cooler with a fan blowing air through the ice and down a small duct to the driver... usually see in on their wagon...
I will search my pictures to see if I can find it....

SS,  my design was like what you describe as Vesco's.... I have never seen his or as a matter of fact any pics of remote unit to cool the cockpit.

This should be simple,  An insulated box with a forced fan blowing outside air through and over Dry Ice, exiting via a flex duct or ducts into the car.

I am just not certain what the exit temperature of the  air will be and what the air velocity will be.  Then not sure how long dry ice will last in the cooler with hot outside air being forced over it.

You want to breathe in  CO2?

We used to run air through a cooler that had a small air-to-air intercooler bathed in ice water.  plenty cold, onboard and easy.

jb2,  the fan blows air into a set of alum tubes in the cooler (like heat exchanger tubes in a natural gas or propane heater) the Dry Ice is in the cooler,,, the fan forces outside air through the tubes, out the duct to the cockpit,,

Should be no way for any CO2  to get in the car?  or am I missing something ?

If that does not cool the air, then maybe just put regular Ice in the cooler and just change out more often,,, the reason I first thought of Dry Ice, is I felt it was colder and would last longer ?

Maybe I am missing something,,, I am not an engineer,,, I am just the driver

Charles,

3737 lakester team used hand cart with battery, blower, hose, cooler, and regular ice at Bonneville a few years ago.  Driver said they just stuck the hose inside the front of his firesuit until just before time to go then removed it and zipped him up.  He said it worked super while he was waiting in staging.  With a full body car you've probably got room to run a similar set up on board or maybe pump cool water through a  vest for comfort during the run as well.

I didn't make that trip so didn't see the actual set up, just know it got good reviews from the driver, regular ice did just fine.  I can get more details and send you a rough sketch if you want.

                        Take care,

                        Ed

There are several that wear cool vests. They really do help. A large umbrella helps while in staging as well.
