As for it taking 30+ seconds to exit a car. Most(I) want to make sure it can be done with no issues. That you understand that if the car is on fire you don't panic and get out at 150+/-mph.You don't want your belts/nets/steering wheel holding you up.
God forbid any thing happening but it can and DOES happen

Actually Charles on oval track and road race cars I work on, if I have the choice, I use one of the rust paints, usually Tremclad. That way I can spray it with a gun and touch up with the rattle can. There's no primer involved and it drys with a semi-gloss. Rustoleum is another brand and I believe there are others. You'll really appreciate it the first time you do a repair or modification and your welder will appreciate it even more. Any fumes produced are much less noxious than with paint or powder.

Logic would dictate paint over powder for the ease of future modifications and touch up etc...

But I sure like the durability and finish of Powder Coating.  The Vicky's Chassis is Powder Coated, but the Cage (all interior stuff) is Paint.  So far all the modifications  we have made are to the seat and cage, etc,, so no re-do's on any powder coated parts So Far !!

I am racking my brain to make sure the Stude is "once and done" !!  but I feel  Stan, PJ and others are correct and there "will be future modifications"   needed or REQUIRED !!... then ouch powder would have been a bad choice.

Oh well,,, headed down to the shop to make some brackets to mount the fire bottle in the Vicky.

The other approach is to paint it initially. At the end of a season, once you know everything works and you don't need further modifications, strip it down for maintenance and do any powder coating then. They're going to blast it to do the coating anyway and the rust type paint is easily removed in the process.

We use a paint called Hammerite (sp?).  It comes in quarts, gallons, spray cans.  Hard to find.  It's made for farm equipment and gates and other outdoor stuff.  No primer required, thick as h*ell, dries in a hammered finish.  I roll it on my frame rails (they're a little deeper than most).

Stan,

Hammered Finish ?   More like  "Egg Shell"  vs Satin ?

Charles,

Rustolem works good thats whats on my car trailer and since you are making the body removable it would be no problem to touch up.

Joe was over for a bit after breakfast this morning and he painted the Vicky's new cage parts.  Yeah the Rust -oleum  rattle can seemed to work good.

"If I only knew"  I would get the Stude right the first time and I would not have to add/modify anything ,, I would sure prefer to use Powder Coating... I know, I know,, paint is much better to work on, re-do, match and touch up...

Oh well,, having trouble with the fire system plumbing on the Vicky.. back to the shop before supper....

A few more shots of the floor, drive shaft and trans tunnel.

Note: the extra  tubing from the "A" Pillar down bar to the chassis

Well Septmeber meet has came and went and the Stude did not make it... October is near and we will not finish the build for any shakedown or test and tunes this year. I am so bummed  :-( :-( :-(

Time and $$$  are on short supply, so to continue to do it right, looks like Dec/Jan before project completion.

I will keep the diary going as we finish the project.
