Maxx,

Not sure how close in size you are to each other??

The 1" padding rule is for the seat bottom, so the seat belts hold you in... to much padding and the thought is an impact can compress you down further in the padding and the belts would become looser.

With that said, it would seem OK for ISP to make the seat and built in padding to the larger drivers size, then make a second seat cover for the other driver.  IF you are close in  size,, as the Shoulder and head restraint must line up well for each driver,, if you are not close in size,, then I would guess that would be a problem with ANY seat.

Imagine my 5'10"  185lb crews chief trying to set in my seat,,, He would get lost in it..

These and any quality seat are a bit costly,,, but as I once said in my bike racing days.. you put a $40 helmet on a $40 head,, I always bought the upper end stuff and still do...

Hope the pics of the seat and assembly help you make your decision easier.

Let me know if I can help.

Just curious Charles.... are you planning to run any roll bar support tubing beside the seat?

Kent,,,

Yes I plan to run a roll bar support tube from the main hoop/back bar  down beside the seat and to the chassis.

But is it required ? and
I am not sure if it is needed, the seat is thick 5052 alum and the the left side is heavily braced and reinforced at hips and ribs...that with a full door net and door should be enough,,, but I still plan on a diagonal brace as you asked about,

But due to my size, I will not x brace the door/ seat area back to the "A" pillar down bar as I could not get in  the car then.

My thinking is  we are not a car to car or car to wall contact sport, so containment is the key, not side impact from another car or wall,,,

Please Correct me if my thinking is skewed

Charles --

I've been led to believe over the years that the door is not considered in containment, although we know under many circumstances it offers assistance.

it may not be car to car or car to wall but if you do get upside down an start barrel rolling it wouldnt be much different...

Stan and CTRon,  I agree and we need all the assistance we can get.

Working on "A" and "B" pillar secondary bracing (in addition to  standard 8 point or 10 point cage design) and a way to increase / brace/protect the left side of the seat as well (and still be able to get me in and out)

Back to the drawing board !!!

Charles,

You might think about a swing out diagonal door bar on the left side.
We ran one the drag car didn't have any problems.
I'm not sure if the rules allow but sure makes getting in and out easier.
Just some thoughts.

Robbie, I discussed the swing out bar with Charles a while back, I think he talked to Timney about it as well. That's a last minute add on when everything else is in place. See you on the chat line.

Robbie and Glen,

Yes I agree with the "swing out door bar"  it will pass tech, but most builders and inspectors don't like them.  When I drag raced many mooons ago... One of my cars had a swing out and one did not...

I will make the swing out decision at the last minute once car is done and ready to come back apart for paint/powdercoat...

We have some designs in mind that we may try and depending on how fast I can exit the car may determine the final choice...

One thing I can not find in the ECTA or SCTA Rule Book is the time allowed to exit the car.

I have heard 3 conflicting times they allow you in the exit drill..

30 seconds  - 1 minute and 2 minutes...

Does anyone know for sure.

I can get out of the Vicky (before the door net instali and head and shoulder restraint) in less than 15 seconds,,, With the Head and Shoulder restraints installed  it increased average exit time to 18 seconds and now with the door net I imagine another 5 seconds... will know tomorrow the exact time,, but I am certain under 25 to 30 seconds,,,

Looks like Studebaker is going to take between 2 and  2.5 times as long ????

Charles,

I haven't been able to find an exact time either, but from watch Keith and Joe in tech line
I think the main thing is the order in which you do things. Kill power, fire bottles etc. etc. then get out as fast as you can
just what i observed.

Robbie,,

Thanks, The best thing is to practice, so an emergency exit looks smooth and natural.. Then if timed it should be within the "guidelines'"

Just got the extra cage bar ("Petty Bar"  welded in the Vicky and the Door Net mounted..

A little touch up paint and the we Install the Fire Bottle system...

Charles --

I saw where you modified the safety equipment on the Vicky.  It brought to mind a question you had a week or two ago about painting or powdercoating the chassis.

My buddy Al Simon, a pretty good chassis builder for street cars and race cars, says you don't powdercoat race cars.  It's because you're always making modifications -- just like you just did.

And the Studebaker may need some, too.  Even thought you've well thought out your completed vehhicle, you may want(or have) to change something in the future.  And I understand that paint is easier to touch up.  Just something you might want to consider.

Added to what Stan just said, powder is a real pain to remove if you are going to do further welding at any point, whether it's a modification or repair. It must be removed well back from the work as it just bubbles and gets hard if it's overheated. With your body being easily removable for service or cleanup I'd be tempted to use paint that can be easily touched up because access shouldn't be a problem.

My own inclination is to use a light colored rattle can paint because it is easy to inspect and easy to repair or modify followed by easy touch up. This comes from a guy who tends to change things and has spent a lot of time in classes where contact was sometimes involved.

Stan and PJ,,

You guys are wise beyond your years,,, Yes today I spent time sanding off the paint on the roll cage of the Vicky to add some more tubing and some mounting tabs,,, If the cage had been poweder coated it would have taken much more time and rather than using sandpaper I would have had to grind in there,,, whew,, !!!
Plus it would be hard to touch up.

PJ.. paint my entire Frame, Chassis, Cage  with a rattle can ??

Hmm,,man my finger would be sore ??

I may buy some rattle can paint and have my painter color match it, so he can spray the chassis,, and I can touch up with rattle can when/if needed...

Hey I heard Rustolem  makes paint that matches thier rattle can colors .. any truth to that ?

That would be a possible solution.

Oh, well Taking the girls out to Dinner and a Crusie in at Pilot Mountain... gotta go...
