My friend from Wells relayed the fact that both the Utah and Nevada authorities are trying to make up for budget deficits by more strictly enforcing speed laws in both states.  I think we contribute enough to their economies without having to chip in any more.  A word from the wise.

Guaranteed way to reduce, if not completely eliminate, the number of speeding tickets you get:  Drive within the speed limit.  Always.  School zones, residential zones, on the freeways and interstates, in industrial parks, and everyplace.  Get so used to it that you don't even think of stabbing the brakes reflexively when you see a police car - because you KNOW you're going at a completely legal speed.

And as for the time you'd save by going faster -- well, first of all, it'll cost more fuel to go fast, and second of all -- why are you in such a hurry?  Didn't you leave on time, with enough time to get where you're going without speeding?  Or -- if you're on the way to the Salt (for instance0 -- hey, you're on vacation.  Take an extra moment to see where you are - instead of blazing through at warp speed, trying to get there.

Sounds like I'm an old fuddy-duddy, I admit.  But -- I don't speed and therefore don't get tickets.  Not even in Wendover when I'm returning to town after a long day on the Salt and the sun is in my eyes when I make the sweeping right-hander entering town by the Car Quest store -- and there's a cop sitting there to catch the racers who are in a hurry to get to a shower.  We see it every year.

this appears to be a valid warning: i sent out an advisory to several of my nevada/utah friends and got back 4 replies within 20 minutes stating that they had recently received speeding tickets in nevada.  one of them receiving her first citation in 37-years.

37-years ago?

even glen and elmo weren't quite old then.

 cheers

Stan,

Didn't you post something on this last year before Speedweek? Certainly good advice!

I have a friend (an retired Cop) that called me from Wendover just before I left for Speedweek in 2006 to warn me about speed traps in the small towns on the way up that he sucessfully avoided.

Every year when it gets closer to Speedweek, I try to let everybody know about law enforcement.  Last year, there were 5 new city cops and 5 new deputy dawgs hired.  These guys were fresh out of the acadamy and VERY anxious to keep their jobs!!  I don't see this year being any different, so pay attention to the weight of your foot, or use cruise control (you know, one of those extra perks you got with your vehicle!).  There use to be a "safe" time to speed on the interstate, but that window no longer exists.  Coming from SLC, they sometimes allow 5 miles over, but don't count on it speed limit is 75, not "Wonder how fast this puppy will go!"

Also, as an advanced heads-up.... speeding to land's end or away from land's end will get you caught as well.  Now, let's discuss open containers and seatbelts!!!  If you have an open container coming off the salt, stop, give me a holler and I'll dispose of your container. Also, once you hit Land's End, get those seatbelts buckled up!!  I can guarantee there will be at least 1 officer parked between the bend in the road and the freeway entrance.  Think you'll sneak in the back way?  Nope you'll find UHP, Deputy Dawg, or WPD.  If one doesn't get you, another will.

Stay safe, practice going the speed limit, it'll teach patience, and spend the money you saved on something you wanted!!  Besides, if I find out you got a ticket.....well, there's just no end to the harrassment you'll get, and yes, I'll tell everyone!!

The last ticket I got was in 1969.The rest has been luck since then. Like most I have broken the law and got by with it. But being retired I am in no hurry to get anywhere.

What do you think those expensive detectors are for?  10 mph hour over the speed limit at a 12 to 13 hour drive, I'll take a chance.  Look at it as a donation to your favorite racing state. shocked

If in doubt, it probably IS a mistake.

I tend to be a cruise control guy and stay in the right lane, but that hasn't stopped me from getting tickets.

The key is fighting them, and I recommend Mark D. Southerland's book Traffic Ticket Defense.

Since my first trip to Bonneville in 1994, I've received four speeding tickets, and I've contested and won two parking ticket citations.  I fight every speeding ticket, including two speeding tickets that were issued from out of state.  Of the four speeding tickets I've received, I have won three cases using techniques I've learned in this book.  With no lawyer.

That's a .750 batting average, and there is no greater satisfaction than making a cocky dweeb city attorney and the cop that pulled you over look foolish in front of a judge - usually a judge they know.  In the long run, it saves you money on insurance, too.

I fought the law, and I WON, and you know what?  It's a lot of fun.

FYI ...
The new 80 MPH speed limits on two sections of I-15 in Utah are bracketed by eager UHP troopers looking for drivers who can't throttle back to 75 where the speed limit drops.  Shouldn't bother too many Bonneville racers because the bulk use I-80 or come up through Ely from Las Vegas.  The authorities between Nephi and Cedar City on I-15 refer to the period in April when school lets out at the SLC/Provo universities as the California 500. That's the usual number of tickets given to college kids who are eager to get home.  With the purse strings tightening in Utah the easiest way to increase income is with a radar/laser gun.  Higher gas prices last year helped to increase the issuing of more tickets state wide by budget strapped police departments.

Last year Nevada added 53 more troops to the Highway patrol. Three more were added to the Ely area. A couple of them would ticket their grandma. They act like they are working flat rate. Watch out.         SB

Don't any of these politicians or cops realize that by using tickets as a revenue source they are generating disrespect for law enforcement in the long run. The public sees through the "for your own safety" argument and sees it for what it is-- a way of raising money, not a matter of safety.

Precisely why I fight every one.  And if every one of us fought every ticket we received, the courts would be so clogged, that then, and only then, would the police and politicians realize the folly of their efforts.

Heck, if only one out of twenty tickets were contested in court, the impact on the courts would be overwhealming.  Their system only works if we let it.
