What makes a roadster Modified?
« on: February 24, 2009, 07:52:05 PM »
Please excuse my ignorance (I have a lot of it) cuz I can't put my hands on my rulebook at the moment...well, that's not the only reason for my ignorance...

Anyway, I thought the major difference between a Roadster and a Modified Roadster was the wheelbase.  But I've come across several photos of roadsters with what seem to be very long (or maybe just a little longer than stock?  A 32 Ford is 106.5, right?) wheelbases.  So now I'm scratchin my head.  I did a search in this forum but it wasn't really helpful.  I spose I could have spent more time on it, but it's easier to ask those who know.

So....help?

Steamlining ahead of and including the cowl allowed.
Headrest fairing allowed.
Body may be cut to place the driver as far back as possible.
Wheel wells may be filled
Max wheelbase 190"; front tread 38" and rear tread 50" minimum
Wings allowed.

Just some highlights.

I hope I'm not beatin on a dead horse, but is there a wheelbase limit for the Roadster class?

And you may use a Model T body in modified roadster. In roadster class it must be 28 or later, with a 28 size grill shell min. 190 max wheelbase in modified. And you can run a wing.

Here's what spurred the question:

The run logs show it as a F/BFR...and the "M" is taped over.  Again, in the run log, it's shown as making a qualifying pass and a record return in F/BFR.  Those happened on the same day because the weather was goin downhill fast.

The more "research" I do, the confuseder I get.

Dan, do you remember this car and what went on with it?

The Bruce Linsmeyer car is shown as a F/BFR not a B/FR. The car runs a Chevy or Olds Indy car engine on alcohol. Close personal frriend of Bruce's, Walter Medlin, drove the car to a 216 record and red hat at Speedweek.

Bruce has built and set records with the other turbine streamliner.

Rules that differ between Roadster and Modified Roadster like maximum body length, maximum wheelbase and maximum engine set-back are what they say -- maximums.  A roadster can be built to run in each division -- as it looks like with this car.  By adding a streamlined nose, not a stock Roadster grille shell, it can be made to run Modified Roadster.

But by doing this, you might not be able to take advantage of the maximums allowed.  Hope this helps.
