2 cycle fuels
« on: February 17, 2009, 12:31:10 PM »
Does the use of oil injection or pre-mix with a 2 cycle engine bump these from "gas" to "fuel"?
Has anyone had much success with 2 cycles on the salt?

Two cycle engines have had lots of success (= records and = speed) on the Salt -- ask someone like Scott Guthrie -- or the many folks that ran 2-smokes.  I don't know the procedure for running them in gas classes -- whether it's a sealed oil tank and/or buying oil/gas mix from the fuel truck (I don't think it's available) or what-- but 2-stroke engines have been used many times.

In ECTA rules 2-strokes and four-strokes run in separate classes -- but that not the rule for the other sanctioning organizations.

The use of oil in a 2 cycle doesn't push it out of the gas class, but it might not be legal either. The oil could push the gasoline out of the dielectric constant test. It's also an opportunity to add fuel illegally to the gasoline.

To make sure the mix is legal they will test it at tech inspection if you ask.

Lots of 2 cycles have set records.

Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

Q: Would it be possible to pre-order mixed gas/oil so the tank on your two-stroke could then be filled and sealed?

Just open the oil can at the fuel truck, dump it in the container and mix it. Then pour it in the tank and they will seal it.

Last year in fact, when it wasn't too busy at the ERC truck, they would help 'mix/stir' the pre-mix with a few good blasts from the nitrogen wand.

Perfect, thanks.
A two wheel/small engine idea was started by considering what race hardware I had on hand to adapt. Just happened to be 2-stroke, searching here turned up a good question. Now I know.

Is oil injection allowed?
