A couple of years back I had the privilege of watching (and photographing) a human powered world record.

Self powered, level ground, no wind . . .

 80 mph!!!

These folks really pay attention to aero.

 Enjoy.

That's Sam Whittingham? If I remember the name correctly.

What those fellows are accomplishing human powered is truly astonishing, especially after seeing some of the tiny displacement engines run similar speeds at Bonneville.
I've only been able to follow the HPV races on the 'net. I enjoy cycling immensely and envy your opportunity to se it first hand.

Yeah, Sam W.   must be a neighbor of yours?
(Actually, I think Sam and the team are from B.C.)

Great folks, that team.  and most all I met were just the greatest.  The meet was out south of Battle Mountain (west of Wendover)- its a quiet, strange sort of event - then someone goes by at 70 or so!

Yes, Sam is in BC, on Gabriola Island according to his shop web page http://www.fortebikes.com/
There's a good story about his bumping the 1 hour record last November in the "News" section.

WE went down and watched several years ago when one of the meets was canceled.  Great bunch of guys and gals.  5 mile run up to the trap and they were pretty much out of gas as they went through the timed area.  Some would even pass out.  They had a medical team there to get them back going.  Something everyone should see at least once.  They are really packed in there.

These are our kinda people with a passion to go fast. It appears they have different classes but do they have a vintage class for seniors or are you allowed to suck a little oxygen?? Or would that be considered the blown class or a power adder??  Sid.

Designed by Georgi Georgiev, setting records for over 20 years.  We chose his Mephisto design for tuft testing nanotech coatings.  Please don't ask, it's proprietary.

There is a secret to going fast on a level track by human power in a vehicle like this one, all you have to do to have a great advantage over other racers is put giant big diameter tires on the rear of the vehicle and small diameter tires on the front, that way you are always going down hill during the race and gravity will help you beat other racers!! Oops now my secret is out!!  cheers
