I talked with an engineer friend of mine who works at Goodyear, and it was his feeling that with 18 plys the tire would not catastrophically fail for well beyond 300mph, and if the temperature could be controlled then there shouldn't be a problem with the tread chunking.
Michelin states that their aircraft bias tires shouldn't ever see ambient temperatures above 225 (yes, for a few thousand feet on landing). I've got an infrared temp sensor that I'm going to point at the tire. I'm going to do some El Mirage runs and log the temperature. I can stuff that info into a neural net and estimate temperatures for faster and longer runs. if the tire isn't moving past 160 F, I think i'll feel comfortable with that.
I hate to sound like the reckless new guy, but I'm always inclined to do the testing and run the numbers. It usually turns out to be the less reckless path.
