The larger pins are set a bit deeper in the case

These 2 demo the pin size difference

Things to also remember, the rear crankshaft gear has not had its key location cut yet.  Max needs to time the motors together, he runs it "big bang" style, the fronts fire together as do the rears.  So we will see that later with any luck...  grin

Max is not planning too many major changes this year, a few internal and external oiling mods and several other small changes but the bike will remain basically the same

And one last one for Todd, Max gave the normally round exhaust ports the D treatment, been that way a couple of years, but I thought I would just throw it in.

The picture I didn't post?  The new SSLD, you noticed the scooter was on the old lifter right?  Well we are converting the SSLD to a salt trailer that will nest in the travel trailer.  More on that later.

Visited the Thunderdome this afternoon, had to check on Max's progress and see the new 400 MPH solid tire.  (You know, from the other thread)
Now at first glance, I know you are going to think the same thing I did, so I'll just say it first....

Max, the new wheel really needs to be round, I think it will mark the salt if you use it like it is....  rolleyes

(as a side note, I started taking the picture with Max in the chair by Sophi, but jumped up and out of the picture, when I told him to stay in the picture, he said Patti told him he couldn't be in any more pictures until he trimmed up the beard and hair.... personally I thought he looked perfect for the picture of a guy with a square wheel....  ya know, so easy even a.....  grin Just my thoughts)

And in this corner, the challenger....
Here's the pulleys, all ready to go.  Max still needs to cut the keyway on the crank

and from the backside, the hardened steel spacer is pressed into the back of the large drive pulley to keep it from brunelling when it is torqued on the crank.

And with the new drive belt

When I left, Max was back to work on the tensioner for the belt.

Here is the old one, much too narrow for the new belt

And the new one, well the start of the new one...  cheers

Excellent photos, thanks to you and Max both for not only sharing all this info but for taking the time to do so.

Awesome head work from the visuals. The shallow ports are nice, would be nice to have the ironhead harley ports leave that straight out of the head (I've seen a pair that has the ability to have them that way and want to see if the owner is willing ot part with them in the next couple years).

I really like the mirrored dual plug job... most guys in the past have gone part way there by going concentric (180* to the original plug) leaving it too close to the exhaust valve, and some even use a smaller plug to try and save space or angle them too low to clear the rocker boxes leaving exposed threads in the chamber.

My heads I did about 5 or 6 years ago are exactly as it appears Max's are done there... mirrored position in height, fore to aft positioning, and angle... it's proved to allow even less lead time then originally thought and the plugs and piston tops on each side of the domes burn exactly the same.

Love the d-shape ports... lotsa work and would really love to see the flow number differences from that if they're available?

That ball mill cleaned the squared end of the keyway groove up nice in the shaft... sure some beautiful work being done all around.

By the way, I think that new wheel should get some serious traction as is... just need to upgrade the suspension travel an additional 8-10" to compensate.  wink

What's the weight of that peice of aluminum?
Here's some fairly large Alcoa ingots in a semi that a friend brought by one day during a delivery... I can only imagine what Max would do with these?!  grin

Eurekkkkaaaa!!!!!!!!

All the pieces to the new blower drive for '09 are completed.  Now all I have to do is tell Stainless to quit playing sock with Sophi, put on his Cecil B. hat, and return to Thunderdome for some pics.

I dropped in on Max today to check on his progress, there's only 7 months till time to load up...

I was able to catch Max working on his new wheel.... and since he trimmed his beard I got a picture...  grin  It is easy to see that the new wheel is already pulling double duty... serving as a coffee cup and ashtray holder.... a good Road Warrior knows how to make good use of everything.  rolleyes

OK, he was thinking but if you look at the lathe and the swarf bucket it is easy to see he has been making chips.

OK he wasn't carving on the wheel yet, but he finished up the pieces for the blower drive.

Here is the replacement tensioner mounted where the red one was a couple of post back

And the 3 finished blower drive pieces

The finished drive pulley has been fitted to the rear motor crank.... OK some assembly required.... There is lots yet to be done

Seeing him at Bonneville during 2008 Speedweek was the tops, Dave was in awe of the salt and as usual was there helping out anyone who asked..simply put we lost a great man who will be missed by all.

John, I live on the NE side of Wichita, Max is on the West side, so it is clear across town...  rolleyes ...about 15 minutes....   cheers

What's next? Well Max will move to working on the heads.  He has several things going on.  I already showed you the preliminary port work on the intakes.  He will do that to all 4 heads as well as a little combustion chamber work.

Do you see the inner ridge?  Max is thinking that shrouds the valves a little.

So first they get milled a little

And then blended, this one is almost done.  So over the next week, Max plans to have the head work done, they he can attack the remaining work on the lower end and motor coupling gears.

Several years ago Hartmut Weidelich, Max's rider from Aldingen, Germany made a piece for Max that will now be put to use...

Yes it looks like an old piston with a little Black Lightning mounted on top, but please notice the coin slot in the top and bill slot in the piston pin hole.  Max is putting it next to the door so that visitors to his garage can now become sponsors of the project.   grin

Hey folks, a few posts back I mentioned Max wanted to convert the SSLD (Sidecar Streamliner Lugging Device) into a trailer to haul the scooter around on the salt.  It also needs to nest in his travel trailer.  Here is a picture of the SSLD in the trailer

So the modification is on... we started building the SSNST (Sidecar Streamliner Nested Salt Trailer).  Here is the first step... get rid of the casters and put on some pneumatic tires.  (Yes the will scuff a little in a turn, but this is the design Max and I settled on.)

Replace the 1 inch removable braces with welded in 2x2 structure.  Trim the big caster mount pads so the axles can be closer in.

The next issue is to resolve the flex in the 2x2x1/4 inch angle that the streamliner hangs from.  Of course it won't be supporting all the weight of the bike when hauling around the salt, but it will support some of it.  More 2x2 steel does the job here also.

Now the fun begins, I keep having thoughts of building a boat in the basement.... Don't want to build around something heavy that will have to be lifted out.... so far so good...  rolleyes The radial arm saw is on wheels and the back of the trailer is open.
We have to be careful here, the scooter is about 22 1/2 feet long and the trailer is 24.  So the tongue will have to fold up.   The front of the trailer is started.
