AERO426, that is a marvelous image of the timing tag. GOOD JOB.

I remember one day when there were at least 4 of this 'birds on the salt.

FREUD

Thank you.  Jim and my dad were friends.   Jim sent dad what he called his "spare tag".  I think the deal was they had already broken the record again.    Anyway, it has a proud spot in my display case.

Somewhere I have VHS of the Fly Rod running.  I need to figure out how to get that onto You Tube.

Vern Judy was another guy who raced on the salt.  Later the car was painted blue under the name "Winged Warrior".   All of the wing cars in those days started out as factory built Superbirds and Daytonas.

I bet there's a story about the 'Vette having its light on, and up . . .

There probably is and I'll ask Duane the next time I see him.

I didn't remember 2 dual eng bikes.  Can anyone fill in some history or background on any of these picture post?

I "borrowed" this from eBay several years ago.  The print was being sold as Bonneville 1950.

Wow, wouldya look at all the airplanes?  And - is that third-from-last one a small jet?

Note what looks like a berm of dirt along the left side of the track.  Is it dirty salt that was dragged over there, or what?  Floating Mountain seems about right, though -- not much change in that part of the scenery.

Nice photo find, Mike.

is that darrel packard or dorel eckhardt?

dorel, former rod rider, had a laydown 100cc suzuki before he started to race a 350cc yamaha.

I think that one's a Navion. It came as either a single or a twin and used the P-51 flying surfaces shimmed so they'd give much more gentle flying characteristics. A friend of mine had a single with all the shims removed. It was a pretty decent performer.

I have somewhere around 500 B & W pictures from the lakes, Bonneville and other venues of racing from 1947 into the early 1950s. These are going to Jim Miller to copy and include in the historical files of the Society of land speed racing Historians and the American Hotrod foundation files.

These photo's are the property of the Gear Grinder club. The LSR photos have many of the sports great pioneers and cars you have only heard a little about. We have tried to ID each photo to include
names, speeds  & year etc.

There are also photos from Del Mar, Saugas, Carrol speedway, Santa ana and a couple others. This will take some time to do but down the road they will be available to view on line. When it's done you will need some time to view and enjoy. :-D

Coming from the field of vintage aircraft restoration to salt racing my question - Can one still land on the salt today during any of the speed events? If so, how does one go about it?

To the best of my knowledge, the airplanes front to back are: 2 V-Tail Beech Bonanzas, Piper Cub, Piper Tri-Pacer, Ercoupe, the Navion, Cessna 120/140 and last what looks like a Globe Swift.

How does one go about it?  Easy, I guess -- flaps down, gear extended, power reduced, slowly descend 'til gear touches ground, then roll out.

Ah - maybe you were asking how does one get permission...  That's one I can't help you with.  But -- it's done frequently, so there must be some easy route to getting approval - if, indeed, approval is required.
