John Cobb Life Magazine 1947

John Cobb and his record breaking land speed Streamliner, the Railton Special and his attempt to break 400mph. It was actually the FIRST ground vehicle to break the 400mph mark, back in '47. His average (running the course both directions) was 394.19mph over the measured mile, which was set Sept. 16, '47, 15 days after the magazine was published.

That's the car responsible for my interest in things Bonneville, I saw it in the Birmingham science museum when I was knee high, it's the only exhibit I can recall.  As an impressionable youth I was a bit  shocked

I've just come across a clip http://www.dunloptyres.co.uk/dunlop/didYouKnow/speedMac.php

Andy,
we're in good company. A pic of John Cobb's car in a school book when I was 5 got me hooked. Craig Breedlove, Art Arfons and Richard Noble all say that Cobb was the man who did it for them as well. Right back at the start of the ThrustSSC project, Art came to see the chassis being built in the UK and we did a bit of a tour for him. A real highlight for him was taking him to meet John Cobb's widow.
