Foiled again!
« on: October 20, 2004, 11:39:00 AM »
Hey, everyone:

Am I correct to assume that I can't run a crank-trigger ignition system in CGALT? Rule 5C states, "OEM, EFI and sensor controlled ignitions are allowed but must be stock and not modified in any way for the year and model of the vehicle entered."

I'm assuming that crank-trigger ignitions fall under the "sensor-controlled" heading, and since 1980 Pintos did not have stock crank-trigger systems   , I guess I'm SOL, right?

I'm thinking it has to be computer controled to be banned from classic. And there are some computer controlled ignition systems so pick and choose carefully.

You are right. No crank trigger ignitions. When I ran a pinto motor I shortened a stock Pinto distributer to clear the injectors and it happley ran over 8000 rpm. I used the same distributer on the OHV '32 Ply. 4 and now use it and another one on the flathead Ply. Nothing wrong with a Pinto distributer that I know.

Oh, well--if nothing else, that will give me some more room to work with at the front of the engine

Is it okay to lock out the distributor--that is, to have all the timing in right from the start?

Honestly, since the car won't be street-driven, I just figured that locking out the timing would give me one less thing to think about....

I keep my salty fingers out of the distributer and everything has worked fine so far. And it makes it easy to start with the starter. Still this whole thing is about doing it your way so my way isn't really important.
