anyone running a THM200-R4
« on: December 14, 2008, 11:10:56 AM »
I was at the scrap yard yesterday, and picked one up for $20, and THOUGHT it was a TH400. I am OBVIOUSLY not very familiar with GM transmissions. I planned to use the junkyard special for mock up, and then rebuild it when I'm ready to fire up the car. I was just wondering if anyone has used these.  I guess they were used in GM rear wheel drive cars with the 3.8 V6, 305 & 350 Olds and 301 pontiac from 1981 to 1989. This is a 4 speed, overdrive unit.
 I plan to run it behind a 292 Ford Y Block, in a 'glass 32 roadster, 4.11:1 gearsw/ mini spool in a Ford 8 inch (D/STR). Thanks.

nevermind, I talked to the guy who owns the scrapyard in mention.  He said he knows he has a rebuildable TH400, so I'm going to go back and swap out with it.  Free of charge.  So, I'm in the trans portion $20 so far.

$20 for a turbo 400 rebuildable core is a good price.  They are getting tougher to find in the junkyards.
The 200R4 was used behind many V-6 and smaller V-8 applications.  It is an OD auto.  Many have dual bellhousing bolt patterns (Chevy and B-O-P-Cad).  The best version were used behind Buick turbo V-6's and they can be built to handle pretty high power.  I do not know if they have ability to run a coupler for direct drive without a torque converter.  Not sure if the lock-up converter clutch can take the higher power without slipping.  The 200R4 uses the same yoke as the turbo 350 style.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.....

Good article in this month's CarCraft about Art Carr building these trannys....
$20 for a good core 200-4R is a steal.  Might have too much gear spread
into OD for LSR usage though.

I opted to go with the tried and true (gasp) TH400.  Hey, he swapped me straight across.  I saw that article the other day, thanks, nonetheless!  So much for a Ford only car, hahah, just kidding GM guys!

Your better off, the 4th overdrive would have probably proven to be useless anyway,
