53 Stude-Chevy Rear Suspension
« on: December 06, 2008, 12:39:17 PM »
Greetings.

Does anyone have any thoughts given a choice to go with either a ladder bar or 4 link rear suspension. Initially the car will be run in classic/gas altered coupe.

Thanks for any comments.

John.

I prefer the ladder bars, much easier to set up, seems to work on my car, used to drag race a Willys coupe with the same rear end suspension.

I like the 4-link, it allows more adjustment but should be engineered unit from chassis builder with 13" double adjustable shocks. If you use too stiff a spring and set it wrong you just as well have solid suspension.
I'll see if Bvillercr will post videos of some runs.

In the first video I'm in high gear before the first mile.  I went 242 at the 2 1/4 and 257 at the 3 and shut down.

The second video it took off very strong.  It sounds like I'm breaking traction but I'm just clearing the engine up a bit through the throttle.  I got loose half way, because of a bad or loose track conditions.

How soft a suspension would you look for in a '53 Stude? Does it depend on the weight of the car?

The 222 car has an Alston chassis and came with 88 lb springs but we run 110 lb springs because we added a lot of weight.
