I once upon a time knew a guy that was an acrobatic pilot, Pitts S2A plane and all.  He gave me a ride...and that's when hI learned that some planes are designed with the fuselage just so -- so they've got some lift while doing a "knife-edge" flight -- that is, flying with one wing pointing up and the other straight down.  I wonder if that's what this pilot did -- flew it sideways 'til he was close enough, then snapped it 90 left and plunked it onto the runway.  Whatever -- glad I wasn't riding with him!

Apparently, folks - this is a viral video, an advertisement planted on YouTube - it's fake as can be. There is even a video interview with the supposed pilot after the "miracle" took place - embarrassingly fake.

Showed this video to my neighbor, 20 years as pilot in Air Force, now teaching new pilots in Flight Safety at Cessna here in Wichita - his response? "Amazing! How did they fake this?".

There was an Israeli F15 jockey who landed his jet with most of the right wing missing, but that is due to the shape of the plane.  And it has more than 1:1 power to weight ratio.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LveSc8Lp0ZE

The video is a clever fake.  Very clever, but still fake.

there are more than one video in the flying senes---check the top of the wing in some of the inverted sequence---sounds remarkably like a model airplane---wing is taken off with a snap roll when in a barrell roll--then it gets "EDITED"

OK, I've looked at this about ten times and I honestly can't say it's fake.  I'll have to call a couple of aerobatic friends of mine to find out.  I can say that it's possible.  Aerobatic aircraft have better than 1:1 thrust to weight at low speed; many of them hang on the prop and do tail slides at air shows.  If it isn't fake, he fell into a spin, kept a cool head, powered onto knife edge, and threw the stick hard over just before impact.  If it was planned, he took a little too long recovering the spin for safety.

Is there anyone quoted on what was faked and how?
