Gas Coupe Sedan Question
« on: June 28, 2004, 02:26:00 PM »
Now in the third year of my one year plan to build a streamliner.  However a friend is interested in running in one of the Gas Coupe classes.  We were wondering if the early Saturn Coupe (1993 SC2) is considered eligible for the coupe class.  We aren't sure if the rear passenger room is large enough to make this an SCTA approved 4 seater?  Anybody know?  Another question ( but not dealing with the Saturn)concerning the rule that disqualifies a car for Gas Coupe status when a front wheel drive is converted to rear wheel drive.  Is it permissable to convert an all wheel drive to rear only rear wheel drive for the Gas Coupe class?  Something like a Subaru or an Audi?

 Thanks   Art

Front wheel to rear conversions have normally been classified as an Altered. Check for what makes a Gas coupe. Just because you change something in a production car to make it illegal for production does not mean it's a gas coupe. The entrant needs to meet one of the criteria to meet the gas coupe rules.  Remember we don't direct the car you should build, or this would be NASCAR. Was the Saturn you are asking about, 1993 SC2, listed a a Grand Touring or a Sports car from the factory?...2 gives the impression it is for 2 occupants only...Like the Datsun 240Z a kit was available to put 2 small seats in the back. But it's a GT, the 2+2 is a sedan.  Find an original brouchure (e-bay-swap meet etc) Do your home work and be ready to prove it beyond a doubt. Johnny Cockran won't be there with you in impounds and that not where you want to find out all your hard work was for not. good luck JD

Thanks Jimmy,  I think we solved the problem, Today we just acquired a Chevette which is a 4 passenger car for sure and has been used in the coupe and sedan classes already (Record holder Joe Timney in the BWT-LSRacing E/GCC was a chevette).  Also it is a rear wheel drive design so we won't have that problem with the Gas Coup class restriction on conversion.  We will be doing an engine swap which will get us out of teh Production category.  The Chevette is not as streamlined as the Saturn but Hey! look at all the money we will save by not paying Johnny Cochran. See how easy that was everybody. Just change the car.  NOW what are you going to make it? I'd like to think a AA/BFC using a Big Chief Pontiac, a quick change, Glide ,and the stock wheel base would be really cool.
