Lanyard Kill Switch for Motorcycle
« on: June 10, 2004, 04:29:00 AM »
Where can I get one?  Last year I used a string through the rocker switch, but was frowned at, and advised to get a real switch.

Thank you
scott, I think about anything would be better than the fish line set up I had last year.  It raised some eyebrows, but I demonstrated its funtionality and they passed me through inspection.

Paul, look carefully at which switch you get as a bunch of them are made for dirt bikes and ground out the circuit. You really want one that just interrupts the circuit.I have a couple of Pingels on my bikes and they are the interrupt type.

Firemanjim is correct ,there are two types ,normaly closed contacts going open on activation, this is the prefered type and by far the easyest to install , I ordered 2 from the states last year high quality switches ,that were sposed to be the above type , what arrived were the dirt bike / quad types that are normally open and go closed on activation , it was ok for me as I just used a relay to change the open/close sequence and used this relay to shut off  fuel and other things so it worked out ok for me

Be careful what you buy. Some of the $25 dirtbike types that look pretty cool with the molded rubber pull off cap etc. actually have the cheapest of cheap 30 cent switches inside. Performance is marginal to say the least!
MPS make a high quality switch that uses a two prong connector, with a simple wire loop on the pull out side.

The ground-out type is for two-strokes -- snowmobiles all use 'em.  Grounds the magneto when pulled out -- engine quits.

And the one that I ordered by phone - and carefully described what I wanted -- arrived UPS out at the Wendover KoA as the wrong one.  Glad I had my soldering iron with me to change it.  And when I got inside I found that it, indeed, had a real cheap switch.

The one on the bike now is the good type -- two contacts in there, and they connect by going through the wire inside the pull-out part.

Still, don't forget to firmly plug in the tether before the beginning of each run -- yeah, I've had the motor mysteriously die during a run -- and also a fail-to-start on the start line.  Sorta embarrassing...

Boy, Scott, that's a spare item I never had thought about taking with when we go racing.  Now I've gotta remember what brand I've got so I can order the part.  Thanks for the tip.

Here I was about to drill an ATO fuse and mount it inline or the old drill the factory kill switch. And the coiled thether from the local riverboat casino...

The handlebar mounted fuel petcock shutoff ate my billet budget.

The Pingel switches are very nice, and they
have both types, normally open and normally
closed. They also have a remote fuel valve
 for the motorcycle fuel folks.

 Cheers,
