spoiler
« on: March 04, 2024, 08:39:37 PM »
I have decided to go altered and have a spoiler/wing question. Rule book says "maximum spoiler chord measured on the top surface is 10 inches from the trailing edge of the body."  Does the rear bumper of my Mustang qualify as leading edge of body? My Sons Mustang drag car has a wing on the back and it extends about 9.5 inches beyond the bumper. Maybe 16 inches from the edge of the hatch.
  Thanks in advance!

The 10 in of cord would be measured where the spoiler is mounted to the deck lid .

What style of spoiler are you considering? You may be mixing up the definitions of the two styles allowed.
The rule book definition you're quoting is for "Approach 2" which is figure 10 in the book.
Good luck!

Rule states spoiler mounted on upper part of body and allowed 10 in max from spoiler + 1 in mounting.
tab.
And for cars like our 222 Camaro the bumpers are considered part of the body as they are not removeable.

10 IN max measured at center of body as some cars are not strait across. And allowed more at ends such as Studebakers.

I am going with style 2 spoiler. The bumper is straight across and not removable so Ill get it set up and contact the right tech person to see if they approve of my set up! Thanks for your replies!

10-4.
You're on the right track and yes, as stated your "bumper" is considered part of the body.

Mike- it seems to me that the drawing of option two showing uniform chord length of 10" across the width of the spoiler and the statement in the text that the maximum chord is measured from the trailing edge of the body (bumper cover in this case) which is likely several inches back of the mounting point (usually trunk lid somewhere) are in conflict. If the chord length is measured from the bumper cover it could be much more than 10" (from the mounting point). This is an important distinction. Your thoughts?

I agree and am aware of that picture as I mentioned above. My issue is the text says 10" from the trailing edge of the body which is not necessarily the mounting point as shown in the drawing. Just looking for some clarification. You know, bigger may be better.......

It's a 10" max, not minimum.
If the mounting point is 4" forward of the trailing edge of the body, bumper in this case, the spoiler chord could only extend 6" past it.

Thanks Mike.

No worries, Dr.Jack.
I should have included a disclaimer that my answer is not an "official" answer but one from 10 years of experience working in Impound.
That may be the last time I chime in on this stuff since I've been "relieved of duty" by the powers that be within the SCTA.
Cheers.
