California??

Mike

Yes, Eastern California, Inyo County, less than hour's drive to Bishop, then about another hour to the crest.

Check the picture at the top of this webpage.
The Fox reporter commented that is a really beautiful area, and it would not be unusual for a person to take a scenic detour on the return from the original scouting mission.
We'll not argue that.
What was not said is that is also similair to the "Bermuda Triangle" when it comes to eating aircraft.
There are many strange eddies flowing over the top of The Sierra Range.
I'm by no means a pilot; but there was an article in Nat'l Geographic 40 or so years back about The Sierras and a sailplane that caught the "Sierra Wave".
The recording altimeter regestered 38,000 feet when the aircraft with a very dead pilot was found in Utah 3 days later. (No oxygen equip.)
There are no doubt some who can add more to this thread.
Regards...
Jim
