Buel Carb Question
« on: September 24, 2008, 04:03:50 PM »
Have a good friend up this way running a one cylinder Buel M/C on gas, carburated. Wondering if there is a carb that can be used to convert over to alcohol when he is ready? He was told he would have to convert over to injection to run alcohol.

The difference between running gasoline and methanol is about twice as much methanol is required. The Buell has replaceable jets, but you will have do do some calculation.

Entirely doable with the stock carb.

Make sure your fuel line and petcock/shutoff is big enough to flow what is needed.

Methanol will make some rubber swell and make it useless over time. Most modern rubbers don't have that problem, but the only way to tell is to run it.

I doubt if the fuel line size will be much of a problem on a single cylinder Buell. I've run a single 3/16" fuel line to four carbs on alky with no problem.

The sensor is an oxygen sensor and doesn't much care what the fuel is. Gasoline, Alcohol/Methanol, Propane, or Diesel it still shows the remaining oxygen left in the exhaust gas.

Willie,
I told him about this site yesterday so he is reading the reply's and making notes. If the weather holds he will be running at the World Finals. I'm coming down without the Lakester to spectate and assist where needed. Missed meeting you at Speedweek but will do so at the Finals. Thanks to the rest of you for the information.
