Just a comment or 2 and some questions...

Excellent jobs!! Kudos to our great reporters/photographers. Better watch out or channels 2, 4, 5, & 13 may be knocking on your doors either to hire you or buy you off, since you're making them look like the amatuer hour that they really are.  [:-D]

Does the crew have parts req'd to do what repairs are needed?
If not, can they be flown in?
That head is really ugly and I'm hoping it looks worse than it is.
"She who must be obeyed" says I might as well plan on a day trip for Wed, since nothing is getting done during daylight hours, but one big nose glued to the screen.
Is this event really open to anyone who turns up?
We were told that insurance regs prevented anybody but competitors and crew; but it would seen that if you sign your life away with the proper releases; most anybody with a modicum of common sense should be allowed.
Regards,
Jim

Jim, I used to be a real radio announcer, but it was a combination of the great pay, the easy working hours, and the adulation of the public that got me to quit and go into porta-potty duty.  Don't worry -- and anyway, I don't watch TV so don't know when they've got job openings.

There's no question that you'd be allowed to come out here for the event.  No admission charge, either (unless Linda, the ladyyou'll recognize at Land's End) tries to get you topay up), and while I saw a pad of pages for attendees to sign and some arm bands -- I haven't seen many folks doing either signing or wearing.  Come on out and we'll sign your note saying you are on an excused absence.

Run information:

Mormon Missile won't return today -- broke a timing belt and it's not repairable in the time allowed.

Buckeye Bullet is questionable as to whether it'll run today.

Burkland is (supposedly) putting the rig into position to tow to the start line for a run in the next half hour.

Further deponent sayeth not.

Burkland just left the pits -- should be ready to run in 15 minutes or so.  Ack bike might run after that.

I heard this event wasn't open to the public.  Is this true can I come out and watch or will I be denied? I wouldnt think they could keep me from coming out on the salt.

Yes, come on out.  No restrictions on who comes out here.  I'll even go so far as to ask for positively absolutely sure when we leave tonight, okay?

Tom Burkland is in the car now and preparing to run,

Because the oil line broke on the Demon did it loose OP and destroy the motor or is the fire damage mostly cosmetic?

Hope #411 does it…..wonder if anyone is going to have some vids?

I think the damage is pretty serious -- I don't know if they'll be able fix overnight.  Lots ofhoses and wires needed.

As for videos -- we're planning on staying here in the pits for the down run of the 411, and then head to the tower for the (hoped for) return run.  I don't have a tripod for the camera - will try reall hard to keep the camera steady.  That's some video I'd like to have for my personal collection.

PS:  John Levie is standing here giving me shade while I type.  He wants to see his name on the internet when he gets home (to Elko) tonight.

There -- see, I told you I'd use your name.

Burkland run is still in the future - but not too far in the future.

Okay -- the Burkland push truck (for the return run) is back here at the pits, and the word has been sent to the car that all is ready.  Pretty quick now the car will start today's run (the third run of the day).  In case you haven't sen the earlier posts, the Speed Demon went 386.289 kilo, 386.199 mile on the qualifying run, then hurt the car when an oil line broke and started a fire on the return run.  The car went through the lights fast enough to qualify for the record, though.  I don't have the final numbers on that.

The Mormon Missile went 227++ on the down run and broke a timing belt - no return run today.

Motors are started on the #411 car.  Canopy is down.  It's 5.51PM MDT.  Car is moving.

Four miles from the pits -- slowing, brake doors are open.

Looking okay at the two.

...

Pure internet gossip:

The 227mph speed sounds like what broke is the aux injection pump belt.  Running off a single injection pump would line up that speed.

And Duramaxes don't have timing belts, it's a geared cam, injection pump, and waterpump assy. :-D

Hey McRat!

You set one dang record and all we hear is Duramax this, Duramax that.

Are we going to have to ban Duramaxes??? :-D
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.
