I just talked to Sam.  He and Terry Kizer are playing sheet metal/body work guys.  He wants to run today if the wind goes down.

Speed Demon making a 3rd run...counts as a 2nd for the last one...weird FIA regs.

Word from their pit: they missed the record by 2 mph, gotta run 253

Okay:  First of all, the Burkland car has blowers on each engine.  Belt driven blowers.

Speed Demon:  Official reocrd times, pending certification:

250.917  kilo,   250.053  mile.

Speeds are in excess of 1% over the existing record, so it will be the new record (again, pending cert).  I wonder if Dan measured the motor while they were building it -- oughta be lots cleaner that way, hey?

No word yet on whether they'll try another turnaround and return run, but the DA is going up quickly -- I assume they'll have serious thinking to do on that.

Wind is picking up -- down course, five-8 mph.  DA is sharply up as of now -- rising, at 6800 feet.  SP is 25.709"

Temp is 80F at the Seldom Seen Slim Pickup truck station.

Now the really bad news:  Wes Hutchens is on his way over here.  Oh, no, what'd we do to deserve this?

Rocky isn't ready to run, won't unless the winds die down.  Otherwise in the morning.

Sam Wheeler is working on the body.

Leo Hess is still scratching his head.

#715  (Speed Demon) is being questioned, as I type, as to his return the return the return run.

In the Demon pits it was announced that they got the record.  They took it away from the Honda F1 team of a few years ago, who had taken it from Terry Nish (or the Nish team, anyway.)  Terry was there in the pits to congratulate 'em.

Photos shortly.  Course is in a 1 hour (or so) hold.

Lotta people were gathered around the Hess liner as the motor fired a couple of times.  It's been quiet since then.  Not much action in the Burkland pit, Ack Attack's body skin is off and work is being done in the liner.  OSU is still waiting for the motor which is being repaired in SLC.

Photo of George Poteet and Ron Main as they celebrate the record.

A big Boo-Hoo!  We're on I-80 headed east.  Dang, it sure is difficult to leave, especially during this meet.  But we've got to get home and make the mortgage payment and the cellphone payment and so on.  So - - Ray, you've got the duty, Sir. Don't get stuck in the muck at the end of the course.

I got a good-bye photo of George Poteet standing by the car and looking happier than a truckstop, and another shot -- this one of Kenny Duttweiler.  He looked pretty darned happy with the engines he builds for the car.

Just passed by the end of the course/the pits -- and whoa, we didn't realize how close to the highway we have been all week.  Yeah, we were hearing truckers blow their horns at us -- but the perspective is different from inside than it is from out here.

Ray -- I'll ask Debbie to put those links on the front page of the site.  I'm trying to make it as easy as possible for the folks that are not forum members to find your photos.  I tried to put the links in front -- manoman, did I ever prove once again that as a programmer -- I'll stick to my job as reporter.

Ta-ta for now.  If any of you have questions you can either ask me here -- or send me an email jonwennerberg@nancyandjon.org.

Later...
