That's what I've been using in my 4-bangers and flathead V-8's.  According to the local parts people, it is no longer available in quarts: only 5-gallon buckets for somewhere between $150 & $200.

I'm talking the old standard, not the current "low-emissions" stuff.

I've gone to standard modern oil and add a bottle of STP (for 4-cylinder engines) to get the proper zinc compounds.

Joe Gibbs Driven BR Petroleum Based Break-In Oil

http://www.hrpworld.com/index.cfm?form_prod_id=890,310_4360&action=product

I just recently became aware of this oil that has high levels of zinc for flat tappet break-in, but they say you can run if for other than that also.

Might be worth investigating.  The machinist that did the machine work on my new truck motor won't warranty his work unless you break-in the motor with it,

Brent,
Chevron Delo 400 is a mineral based oil. Most parts houses sell it.
The trick is finding older stock that has higher zinc content.
You can determine that by the API service classification.
"SM" is low zinc, so look for "SL" or preferably "SJ".
I think you can also find several racing oils that still contain zinc.
Does anyone else have different or better info?
Thanks,

It's been a topic of discussion on the Brit-car boards for a few years now.  Zinc Dithiophosphate has been all but removed from a lot of API certified oils.

Reformulated API oil is killing a lot of flat tappet cars.  I think the reformulated buzzword is "new and improved"

My MGB has flat tappets, and I've found that diesel certified oil has been serving me well, which still cantains Zinc Dithiophosphate.

Also, if you have a transmission, transaxle or a differential that uses motor oil, make sure you're using a grade that still has Zinc Dithiophosphate in it.  Gears will wear as quickly as a cam without it.

I'll email a PDF of the article I received a few years back to you.  If anyone else wants a copy, just send me a PM.

Use what you want and add a bottle of GM EOS or ZDDP and you will be covered. I have used Diesel 10-40 for years and now with the reformulation moved to the additive...Good Luck JD

I learned years ago when I was  teenager from an old timer Chevy guy that got me into cars that EOS was the hot stuff. We used it for assem lube and never had a new cam failure. I'm sure some of you engine guys out there have better insight on what works best but I always had good results with EOS.

Performance Oils and Additives: Got Zinc?

What motor oil is best for my aircooled Porsche? (or any high performance engine)

ZDDP Defined:
Zinc dithiophosphates are a family of coordination compounds that feature zinc bound to the anion of dithiophosphoric acid. These uncharged compounds are not salts. They soluble in nonpolar solvents, and the longer chain derivatives easily dissolve in mineral and synthetic oils used as lubricants. They come under CAS number [68649-42-3]. In aftermarket oil additives, the percentage of ZDDP ranges approximately between 2-15%.

The tow vehicle is a four cylinder Toyota about 3 years old.  It is driven gently with a long life as an important goal.  The truck is used to go to Bonneville, a yearly trip to California, and occasional around town use.  Up until now, Mobil 1, Castrol, or Valvoline synthetics have been used, whichever is on sale.    The only mineral oil was the break in oil.  A Puralotor "Pure One" filter is used, based on info from this forum.   Oil and filter chances are twice a year.

Synthetic costs too much in relation to disposable income.  Plans are to put in five quarts of Parts Master 5W-20 made by Ashland Oil.  It is a $3.99 a quart mineral oil that meets the Toyota oil rating requirements.  A quart of Valvoline synthetic will be added that meets the same Toyota requirements.  It is also made by Ashland Oil.  This blending is a trick used by my father to save money in hard times.  He claimed it gave the benefits of synthetic with less cost.

My father usually knew what he was doing, but I would like a second opinion on this.

Sum,

The Joe Gibbs break in oil should not be used for more than break in time and dyno time. 500 miles max if in a street motor.

It does not have corrossion protection for regular use,,,once you run it and break in, drain and replace with your oil of choice,,,

This is from my oil supplier and my motor builder.

Take the time to talk to the Joe Gibbs Oil tech guy. Tell him what you are doing. They now have formulated some oils for the flat tappet muscle cars that is not the same as their flat tappet oils for NASCAR. They are very racer friendly...Good Luck.... JD

IIRC Royal Purple's label says 2500 miles max on their break-in oil. Probably no detergents or corrosion protection.

J Six,

Yes Joe Gibbs oils have a HR Series,,, Hot Rod Oil,, for older flat tappet applications (works on any engine however)  It has High ZDDP content as well as additives for corrosion resistance for cars that are not daily drivers,, like show cars, street rods, muscle cars etc,,, comes in 2 or 3  weight ranges,,, around $7.50 QT.

I use nothing but BradPenn's race oil in my motor. It's the old Kendall refinery in Bradford, PA. Never an issue...
