high performance engine coatings
« on: January 29, 2005, 12:59:00 AM »
We have started on our latest engine. The block is machined and ready. Now we want to coat the pistons and are not sure which way to go.Do we just do the tops? Or should we do the skirts too? Any thoughts on doing the combustion chambers and valves.

 Engine  5.9 Cummins Diesel,Boat pistons 14-15:1 commpression after machining. about a 750HP shot of Nitrous   :D   .

I have done a fair amount of research and it seems most of the coatings are almost all the same. Any leaders in the field?

Thank's for your input and thoughts,

More of a thought then anything scientific. I heard http://www.swaintech.com was decent. I've done some research for the same motor. Swaintech seems to have coatings for everything under the sun.

Unfortunately since Consumer Reports hasn't run a "Top Ion Bonding Companies" issue, its hard to compare. Swain has a pretty extensive pricelist. http://www.swaintech.com/price.html The website is a pretty informative.

Hey, Randy & Clem -- it's good to see that the truck project is still alive...especially if it means we'll have another look at the Whoop-Ass pit vehicle, too.

I'm not much of a coatings expert, but have you been in touch with russ Meeks at Finish Line Coatings?  I dunno if they do your kind of coatings, but -- being in the coating bizness -- maybe they can give you good advice on where to look if they can't do what you want.

 I think they're at www.finishlinecoatings.com

We use Powerkote by techline coatings. They make a thermal barrier, a dry film lubricant for the piston skirts. They also have a coating for the cylinder walls that just rubs on. The other two are baked at the same time. Number is 909 304-0498
website is:  http://www.techlinecoatings.com/Engine.html vey reasonable and we have seen the skirt coating last for several years..

you may also want to look at HPC Coatings. They do pretty good work. They do work for us and I know Vescos and Burklands have both used them.

Some years ago I ran a 270 GMC with Jahns cast pistons and two Corvair turbos. Got to know the "Black Death" very well. I was also working in a plasma spray dept tool room. I don't remember to well, but I used Metco wire, standard bonding ocy/act on the piston tops followed by (I think) Metco 601-cermaic plasma spray and it worked great as a thermal barrer. I did the exhaust housings also. Maybe you have a Metco dealer near you that can recomend a shop?
