Anybody out there using a Ford 8 inch at BVille? What kind of gear can you get for it? Will it handle big horsepower?
 Thanks for any input,

-are you talking about something like what the 4cylinder Pinto of the mid 70's?
-We've run them in a G/fmr but thats not a lot of HP but the one problem we've had is the gear ratios are not easy to get a good variety.
-something like 4.62 then 4.10 then 3.80 with nothing in between.
-I don't see any reason to run an 8" where you'd be putting a lot of power to'm with an expensive engine when you can a 9" and we all know they'll take about anything you can dish out.

Actually, the Ford 8 inch is supposed to be almost as strong as the 9 inch and should have a lot of gears available for it, though not as many as for a 9 inch.  This is not the same rear that was used in the 4 cyl Pinto; this is a newer design that is used in the Ford Mustang amoung others.  I think it is also more efficient at transmitting power.  Having said that, I sure like my 9 inch Ford rear.  I think either one would work fine for you at BVille.

Jack Kelly with the 644 lakester uses one with his D and E gas Chevies been 240. He's not happy with the slection of gears. not many available for LSR.

Thanks you guys. Good info. I run a narrowed nine in my Beretta that has worked just fine. A friend suggested the smaller eight due to smaller size and weight. I don't think the gear choices would work as well as the nine. I'm starting a new lakster project and am in the planning stages. Thanks again,

There's a guy down in Denver CO. he's is a 8 and 9 inch guru,he told me that some cars from the 60's came with a 2:26 (rare...chickens back teeth) and some came with 2:35(rare but not too bad to find)

Dave,
Caddy has a 8 7/8 with selections from 2.28 up
 Gm 8.5" starts from 2.41
 Gm 7" from 2.14

With all GM's about 4% more power gets to the ground than with a ford -- of course the down side is ratio changes and c clip eliminators required

A Strange dropout 12 bolt or dropout 8.8 (ford)gives the benefits of a 9" with more efficient gears . Does anybody know who made the deal that allowed 12 bolt gears to bolt into a 9" center section . I think it used a custom spool and a custom pinion carrier that moved the pinion upward .
