Rigid Tail for ECTA Motorcycle?
« on: December 03, 2007, 06:53:27 PM »
Has anyone been using a rigid tail for a motorcycle at ECTA?  Thinking about 125 mph and under classes.  I've been there once (with shocks) and didn't remember the bumps.  Don't want to reinvent the wheel (or the shock), but designing/modifying a frame for next year and just wondering about that speed with just front forks.   Thanks,

Not a great idea. Way too bumpy at Maxton. You need some suspension if you want to control it. 125 works in your favor but even still, it would be a hard ride and may well cost you some speed. I've heard of many having the back end jumpin around the track too much without a decent suspension.

Some may disagree, hopefully you'll hear from them!  :-)

Having raced a fairly quick rigid-rear Harley Sportster - I'm inclined to agree w/Murf - the rigid rear makes it easier to get the machine low - but, you pay for it in handling, comfort, and in a reduced ability to maintain traction.  My vote? Bikes have shocks for a reason.
Don't BS on the track - that's what the internet is for.

Thank you Deb and Ray for your insight.  As you mentioned Ray my thinking was all about less wind resistance equals less power needed for the same speed.

The course improves in leaps and bounds each year... But I doubt it will ever be good enough for a Fast Ridgid frame...  simply a bad call...

BY fast I mean anything over say 75mph

Keith... (Seriously my point is it doesn't work very well... and yeah we've had a few that would echo my thoughts )

Keith,
Thanks for the reply.  I was able to modify the rear shock mount to fit the new engine on this winter's new project bike so I will have front and rear shocks as recommended.  I will have to wait until May to see the new track surface though :-(        Thanks to all at ECTA for the stellar job they do.
