Hotel Room exchange
« on: January 08, 2008, 04:35:19 AM »
Well folks it's official.... the 3 largest hotels in the Bonneville area that had any rooms left, released the last 600 rooms today for speed week '08... The hotels started accepting reservations at 7am pt and between 10 to 11am they were all "booked up"... Yes it sucks, but it is the same problem we have had for years...

Because of the shortage and feeding frenzy of the "room release", some people have over booked the number of rooms they will actually use. If you have rooms booked and will not be using them "DO NOT CANCELL OR RELEASE THEM BACK TO THE HOTELS" The hotels do not keep a waiting list and would rather book them to gamblers! Please keep your confirmation numbers and offer them to racers on this site... I say "Racer" cuz we need them.... not someone’s uncles brothers wife’s cousins boss that might want to go to Bonneville, but to a "racer" that really needs the room... but hey its your room and you make the call who you transfer it to...but please do it here.!.... Post your name, rooms you wish to offer, your email address, and a contact phone number if you don’t mind a ton of panic people calling you.

If you are in need of a room, post the dates needed and your contact info...Oh, and be realistic...your not gonna find 6 rooms at the Montego... Figure out what your minimum room requirements are and be happy if you find anything closer than Elko.....

Happy hunting
Kent

ps.. I need 2 rooms from the 18th to the 24th

Hi Kent,

Thank you very much for launching this subject.
I've posted twice during last November, about our 50 cc sidecar entry for the 2008 Speed Weeks.
You've added some precious answers, thanks.

My crewmate Jean, who is in charge of our accomodation reservations,
has just spent 2 hours (from France) at the phone, and he couldn't manage to find any available room !!

We are in need of a room for 4 guys or 2 rooms for 2 or ..., starting from August 17th ending at 24th.

Thank you in advance for all your reasonnable offers : please remember this is not eBay !!!....
Please email to JKayou@aol.com directly.

Regards.

Most hotels will bring ya a roll away bed if the room you have only has 1 bed in it...if your room has 2 beds they hardly ever will bring ya a roller...when ya call them ask if you can reserve a roll away.!... Have your crewmembers bring air mattresses and I have seen cots for cheep at camping supplies and on ebay

My wife, the allstar she is, has booked a couple rooms at the Nugget and at Montego bay for the duration of Speed Week. We do not have rooms at the Montego booked for the 18th due to the fact it was completely booked at the time we made our reservations. We are planning on arriving the 16th and due to the fact that the hotels will not book this day because they don't consider it part of Speed Week, we are waiting until an undisclosed time to get this day booked. We are talking with our fellow Speed Weekers from WA state to see if any rooms are needed and then will see if we can help any one else that may need a room. We are more than willing to sleep on the floor or use rollaways to insure that everyone participating has a place to stay. As we all know it gets very uncomfortable at the Bend in the Road without AC. hope this helps and contact me if I can be of assistance.

It doesn't seem so bad there to me, but then I usually don't get there until 10 pm or so and I'm gone around 6 am .

Looks like I might be in a tent there this year and not the teardrop.  My choice as I refuse to mess with the motel/hotels.  I'll bet the guys down-under get a real kick out of "our problems" with a place to stay.  To them the "bend" with showers and a town near by would probably be like staying at the Hilton.

c ya,

Sum

I'm with Sum.  Last year I left my entry until the last mnute.  I bought a cheapie RV (27 years old $3000) but presentable and everything worked.   As I bought it a few days before we left it was a case of check the oil, water and go.  Got there and back without any problems.  And bend in the road is quite nice and sociable.
Get off the stove Grandad.  You're too old to be riding the range.

Yes Sumner finding it all very amusing ,reminds me of an album title from years past "pampered menials" ,while ppl are prepaired to pay those outragous prices for hotel/motel rooms don't expect any changes , are the camping grounds ripping off racers as well ??? ,looking like the bend in the road is the place to be for me in 09  :-D
cheers

Here's a couple of pictures of the "Hilton"...

Not quite the Bangkok Hilton though. This is considered decent accommodation, you could always bring a tent or sleep in the shearing shed (although it is aromatic). A couple of guys we know just tossed a mattress on the ground and slept where they dropped. It's all part of the experience that we love. On the bright side there is a canteen down next to the lake that the station owner runs and sells beer and bourbon plus their meals are so good that you won't cook for yourself. It also has a pretty good view of the lake and track.

Last time we went down the lake we decided to leave Friday night and stay at Port Augusta (or Port A Gutter as it is it is sometimes known) as this would shorten our journey back to Adelaide the next day. PA is about 2 1/2 hours from the salt and is the nearest large town. There is a town called Iron Knob (no seriously - look it up!) just at the end of the dirt road where it meets the highway where you can get a burger, sometimes get fuel, and can stay the night for $20 a room, all at the petrol station - we passed on this offer and stayed at a Pub in PA that was recommended. Anyway we get up to the room and open the door and the first thing Gaz says is "It's not much is it!", I reply "but we've been staying in the back of a truck for a week, covered in red dirt sharing sharing the loo and showers with everyone else!" = no more complaints. My wife's view of roughing it is a 4 star hotel!!

There are alternatives in Oz though. I think Noonan and the Ack crew stayed at the Mt Ive homestead or you could rent a camper and give it a real good clean before you hand it back + also don't mention taking it on a salt lake or the 2 hours of dirt road either - they frown at this behaviour????

Ask Keith Turk what he thinks of it though. He'll probably tell you he loved it!

I reckon Noonan's better half Michelle would differ on that one..........we sat together on "roast chicken night" at the canteen  , she had one eyebrow raised :-D :-D

I have a photo somewhere of a guy with the caption " this bloke slept at the back of the canteen , on the ground "........and I mean , on the ground......

speedweek here is not for the fainthearted or the cleanfreaks......For me it's a tent and cold showers ...........last time on the way out I was looking forward to a decent wash......

The joints that put there prices up when you guys are in town are just thieves....  I have a history with booking accomm' ,when I used to tour around in a band I rarely remember the thought "gee that was good value for money" when leaving a hotel....they always seem to cost too much whether it's fleas for five bucks or foi de gras for five hundred , and frankly the last thing they really want to do is "accommodate" you.. :-D :-D

Few understand what I'm trying to do but they vastly outnumber those who understand why...................

I snore and eat oatmeal every other morning and drink coffee in the afternoon as I'm a morning person.
