El Mirage photos 11-07
« on: December 27, 2007, 02:00:39 AM »

Well, this last El-Mo event closes out yet another year, and an amazing sport I have always wanted to try. 2007 will stand out as a landmark year for me since it is my introduction to land speed racing and a cure for my disability of having too many speed genes in my DNA. Last month Jason McVicar swung by and picked me up on the way down to El Mirage for the last LSR event of the year. I had just finished rebuilding the bikes engine the week before and was able to get about 40 miles on it before I loaded it into Jason's toy hauler. (During Speedweek while running the bike in the naked class, the air filters that attach to the turbo kept tearing off at speeds over 175mph. This lead to the engine sucking up a bunch of salt and trashing the cylinder walls and valves.)
Since I hadn't put a big load on the engine yet I figured I would run the bike up to 5th gear on Saturday morning and take it easy on the rings for my first pass. I had all weekend long to hammer on the engine so it seamed logical to feel the engine out on my 1st run. Boy was I wrong. It never occurred to me that I might only get one pass. The weather report looked good for at least 3 runs over the course of the weekend so I figured we had 2 days of racing. I learned a valuable lesson that weekend. Just because the weather looks good, doesn't mean that something else wont shut down the course. Jason made a very valid point for me. He said, " When his bikes come out of the trailer they're ready to go Full Tilt Boogey as soon as they hit the starting line. You might only get one chance to go fast and this weekend was--Case in point."
My pass on Saturday morning felt good. The engine ran solid and the bike tracked well while avoiding the dark spots on the course. The bike easily spins the wheel in 5th gear so it's time for some more ballast. Jana and I had a blast this year and we got to meet a lot a fun people. We hope to make a few LSR races next year in between the drag racing. Attached below are photos from our camera. They are petty much in order, starting on Saturday morning.  If anyone has a photo of bike #6880 at speed, I would like to get a copy.

Happy Holidays,  Scott

It is amazing to watch the drivers trying to fit into there streamliners. They're like "Gumbys".

As I lined up with the 428 car I felt like I was getting ready to drag race. All I needed was the Xmas tree.  8-)
