Need source for 1.75 tubing
« on: December 19, 2007, 11:13:57 PM »
Trying to get some 1.75 DOM tubing for my cage.  What kind of prices are you paying?  Using my companies name I had 1 vendor quote $341 for a 21ft stick.  If it weren't for my oddball configuration, I would just order one.  Hope you can help....

That sounds a little steep to me. I just bought an 18' length of 1 5/8" .120 wall DOM from a local welding shop. He had to order it so I know the price was current. He charged me his price because he screwed up and took an extra week to get it. It was $107. Hope this helps. Wayno

Fuel, milk, steel, all that stuff is gettin cra$zy lately. I just pulled my last invoices from Shapiro, and 1 3/4x.120 was@$3.00 a ft.  Unit price for 1 5/8x.134 was $2.30 a foot, I bought over a 100 ft so that brings the price down to $1.90.  The more you buy the more you save.  Thats ERW.

 DOM was $4.60 a ft or $375.  a hundred.

Shapiro is a neat place. Stan hauls off the unwanted/obselete NASA stuff from BOEING in St. louis. He always has a great supply of titanium bolts, billits of alum., odd ball tools, etc. If you go, give yourself extra time to wander downstairs. The guys that work there are X-tra friendly, and you are welcome to wander/look at anything they have. And its all for sale.
There was a time when Stan would give a "no invoice, cash" discount to racers.
They are at 5617 Natural Bridge, Thats kinda north city.

Good luck,   Rick Haynes

ps,  Whats a "oddball configuration"
It's not over, it's just harder.

I just paid 100 bucks for 40 feet of the ERW stuff (1.75 inches) and that was direct from the largest supplier in the area -  and wholesale  (used for a different project -  not Bonneville car!)

DOM cost me 4 bucks a foot last year -

OK, I got in touch with Shapiro (thanks, willie).  Their price on 1.75" min .120" wall for quantities over 100' are DOM $4.35/ft and ERW $3.25/ft.  Looks like a no-brainer to use the DOM.  Anyone else need some?  I'll be pulling a trailer back from Shapiro's to Marion, IL.  Be glad to drop some off on the way or you can pick it up at my place if I don't have to keep it for more than a couple of weeks.

Willie. 1-5/8" .120" is the minumum required. In my 2 cars I've used 1-3/4". thicker than the requirement, as many do.

Is DOM  required ?   I was thinking of a 8 pt.  cage for my 33 Vicky.. since it's a glass car what would be the best material ?   I was thinking 1.75 DOM  with .120 wall thickness.  It will be bolted through the floor into the frame on 5"x6" pads using grade 8 bolts and gussets.

How much does each foot of  this tubing weigh?  I think the extra safety is worth the weight. the car is light anyway,, so a few hundred pounds extra should be ok?

About two pounds a foot.
Maybe we've been down this road before, but 1 5/8 .134 HREW bends on a conduit/pipe bender (1 1/4 conduit size)- the 1 3/4 won't. (The .134 wall is to assure you've exceeded  .120, which with a sonic tester - nominal .120 wont. - Keep your receipts to show tech.

Check up tp date current prices on this stuff 'cause steel is going off the charts- even 4130 that kind of lagged behind has escalated-

"car is light anyway,, so a few hundred pounds extra should be ok?"

Charles, remember -- Land Speed Racing is the one and only venue you'll find where weight is GOOD!  Example:  I went about 207 on my bike, and had lots of wheelspin.  I added 70# of lead to the rear/swingarm -- and picked up 10mph.  I could give you many other examples -- but weight is good.  It's much easier to build horsepower than it is to improve the aero -- but if you can't get the hp to the ground it won't do anything but spin the tires.  More weight usually means more traction, and that means (as long as you've got the hp) more speed.

A bike would not be a good first choice for you.
Hell, most guys would not be a good first choice for a bike rider either.  :-D
