Breedloves Record Holder

Where is the Sonic 1 at today? I seen lots of stuff on his first Spirit of America and the Sonic Aero car but never anything on the Blue Coke Bottle shape 600mph record setter. Is there a web site with it pictures and history?

Was.

In the 90's, after a tour through the states, the Sonic 1 was for a while in front of the entrance of the Petersen Museum in LA - on the publec parking lot - 24 hours the day unprotected.
After a while the paint of the car was so scratched that Petersen send them back to Indiana.
Due to this that nobody was interest to pay the repainting and meanwhile the Brick Yard Museum in Indianapolis got no space left over the car is now in sheet in Indiana..........

What a bummer! I finally get to go to the Petersen Museum in December and would have loved to seen it! We did get to share private time once in the early going with Breedlove at Bonneville when he was getting the bugs worked out of Spirit of America. I remember someone on his crew had a pulse jet go kart that was just a kick in the pants!

You talking about the 1967/68 Green Monster which was used by Slick Gardner in 1975.

Would be great if this racer found now a public museum place, after it stand for years in a sheet of Slick Gardner's farm close to Buellton, CA.

By the way, this is not the record breaker Green Monster from 64/65 - this one was destroyed by a record attempt in 1966, when a bearing failed by 620 mph....

When was Green Monster's last run, I thought it was 67 and it was faster than both Blue Flame and Thrust 2?  (at least in top speed, if not average)

Eric,

as noted by Pork Pie the Green Monster in which Art set his records was destroyed in November 1966 at Bonneville. Various reports quoted speeds of around 600-610mph. A replacement Green Monster was built but later sold to Slick Gardner and renamed the Andersons Pea Soup Monster.  In interviews with Art used in their books about record recording breaking, both David Tremayne and Harvey Shapiro quote Art as saying that 552mph was this cars fastest recorded speed. Maybe Gardner went faster than that later without Art? ThrustII peaked at 650mph.

Robin,

the 67/68 Green Monster was never used by Art at the Bonneville salt flats - this car was used on the quarter mile. He sold the car after his Texas crash (with the Super Cyclop) to Slick Gardner between 1975 and 77.
Slick done the racer on solid wheels and tried at Bonneville in 78 and 79. In 78 Slick runs a one way 552 mph but had a hard time to get the car under control on later runs........

Perhaps I should have made it clear that in the Harvey Shapiro and David Tremayne books, Art is talking about his role as driver coach to Slick Gardner when he quotes 552mph as the car's best speed and not about running the car himself. Whatever - it would be good to see that car and Sonic1 as part of an LSR exhibit somewhere.
