Rule 3.T question
« on: July 17, 2007, 06:50:17 PM »
The rule says:

"all front end and suspension fasteners shall be aircraft type or wired. All spherical ends used shall have a washer larger OD than the joint. No suspension shall have more than 20 degrees unless wheel stops are used to prevent wheel flop over and the tires from contacting any other component with the steering is in the full lock position."

Someone told me:

That rule is just for fabricated steering systems and does not apply to production cars-trucks that are using OEM steering components.

Do I need to try and hunt down metric aircraft type lock nuts and replace the stock nuts on the suspension and fab a wheel stop or was the person correct in saying that production OEM steering components are ok?

Dan please elaborate,

"No" as in: I dont need to hunt down metric bolts for OEM steering and fab a steering stop.

----or-----

"No" as in: The person that said that aircraft bolts are only needed for non stock suspension is incorrect.

Thanks

Stock suspension would be way under 20 degrees of castor, so no stops would be needed.
I'll let Dan address the rest.

JonnyH,

The rule is for fabricated front ends as found in lakesters, etc. Think back to the old days when a dragster would be backing up and the wheels would flop over. The stops were added to the rule book as the rsult of an accident several years ago.

Please do not worry about this item for your car.

Thanks for the info Dan......going through the book one item at a time to see if I missed something and was unsure if it applied.

Saved me some BS.
